COMBINED END-GATE AND SCOOP-BOARD.
PEQFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,692, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed January 28, 1886. Serial No. 190,094. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, itmay con/cern.-
Be it known that I, GUsrAv ADoLrH ltsusonnmnicn, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Herd, in the county of Callaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined End-Gates and Scoop-Boards, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a combined tailgate and scoop-board that, while adapted to be used in connection with wagons of every kind, is yet more especially designed for use upon grain or coal wagons.
To this end the invent-ion consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts comprised in my invention for service, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a wagon provided with my improvenient. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line :v of Fig. 2, showing my improvement as it appears when used as a tail-board. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the improvement in use as a scoop-board.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, A designates a wagon-body, having the usual sides, a, and bottom a.
c a" designate cleats secured transversely of the sides at each end thereof, and a short distance apart, to receive front and rear endboards of the ordinary hind in common use.
B B designate supplemental side-boards, designed to be placed upon the top edges of the side-boards a, and to be held in position by bars Z), secured transversely upon the outer surfaces of said boards B B.
c designates staples or loops projecting from the sides a, to receive the lower ends of the bars b, and thus to hold the boards B B in position.
d designates a metal rod connecting the forward ends of the boards B B together.
E designates the combined tail-gate and scoop-board, and consists, essentially, in a broad board, c, which forms either the tailboard or the bottoni of the scoop-board, according to the position in which it is placed when connected to a wagon.
e designates cleats that are secured transversely to the bottom of the board e at each end thereof, to form broad bearings for triangular-shaped end-boards F, that are secured at each end of said board e, as shown.
ff designate hinge-sections secured to the bottoni surface of the board c at the rear edge thereof.
j" designates loops or staples projecting from the rear end of the wagon-body.
f2 designates recesses formed in the rear end ofthe wagon-bottom or in a rail, a5, transversely secured to the lower surface of said bottom at its rear end, between the side arms of the loops or staples f", to receive the outer hooked ends of the hinge-sections f, which are removable from said staples or loops.
g designates hooks formed upon straps g', secured upon the upper and rear edges of the boards F, said hooks g placed at the apexes of the angles formed by said front and rear edges, as shown.
h designates hooks secured by staples 7i. npon the outer surface of the boards F at the rear ends thereof, whereby the board e is held in position as a tail-gate to the wagon-body, at which time said hooks engage with staples or loops 71?, that project from the outer surfaces of the side boards B B', at the rear ends thereof. (See Figs. l and 3.) Vhen the board e is to be used as a scoop -board-that is to say, to lie in the horizontal plane as a continuation of the body-bottom of the wagonthe hooks g engage the staples o r loops as shown in Fig. 4.
The combined tail-gate and scoop -board herein described is removable from the wagonbody, as will be observed.
Modifications in detail of construction may be made in my improvement without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof.
I claim- 1. vThe combination, with a wagon-body, of a combined end-gate and scoop-board detachably hinged thereto, and having the angular side pieces, F, provided with straps g at their free end, having the hooks g, and the staples h2, which the hooks engage when the tail-board is lowered, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with awagon-body havingthe cleats a2 and the recessed rail c5, of a com IDO bined end-gate and soop-board detaehably In testimony that I claim the foregoing as hingedthereto, and comprisingabottom board, my own I have hereto affixed my signature in e, and the triangular side pieces, F, having presence of two witnesses. the straps g', carrying the rigid hooks g, the y 5 pvoted hooks h', carried by the side pieces at GUSTAV ADOLPII RAUSCHELBAOH.
the ends opposite the hooks g, and the staples l h2, with which the pvoted and rigid hooks h Vtnesses:
g are alternately engaged, according to the THOMAS R. MOORE, adjustment; of the end-gate, substantially as JOHN B. KING.
Io described.
