FEED GUIDE FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES- Patented Apr. 6, 1886 llnrrnio I STATES PATEN rricn.
ADDISOX O. THOMAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FEED-GUIDE FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
EiPECIFlCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,497, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed August 25, 1895. Serial No; 175,261. (No model.)
I 0 all 1071 0122, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDISON C. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Guides for Type \Vriting Machines; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My present invention relates, particularly, to an improvement upon the construction of feed-guides for type-writing machines described and claimed in my application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 17 0,591, filed July 3, 1885.
The object of my present invention is to supplement the automatic feeding of the supply of paper to typewriting machines by affording means whereby the automatic delivery may be effected; and it is further my object to provide the mechanism whereby the desired object is accomplished in such position in relation to the type-writer itself that the work of the operator is never interrupted.
To these ends my invention consists in the general construction of my improvement and also in details of the construction and corn binations of parts forming the same, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
Referring to the drawingsdligure l is an edge view of my improved device, showingin section the portion ofa type-writing machine to which it is attached, and illustrating in dotted lines the course of the paper as it passes through the machine from the feed-guides, and is returned to the delivery-guides; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detail view showing in cross-section through its adjusting means one of the adjustable lateral guides of the device, and Fig. 4 a similar detail view.
A and A are respectively a cylinder and feed-roller of a type-writing machine, and B is the supporting-plate for the paper commonly provided upon such machines.
Cis a flat'plate, preferably of thin sheet metal provided with lateral guides O, in the form of angular flanges adjustable laterally upon the plate 0 by slots 1, formed therein,
and screw-bolts t, the whole being attachable to the supporting-plate B, all as more fully described in my said other application for Letters Patent.
To the feed-guides,as hereinbefore described, I add supplemental or auxiliary guides D, formed rigidly upon and over the guides C, and adjustable laterally with them upon the plate C,by means of the slots t and set-screws t, in order to conform to any desired size of paper within the capacity of the type-writing machine. The lower portions of the guides D are extended downward below the guides C in the form of ear-like projections 'r, bent upward to facilitate entrance of the paper to the supplemental or delivery guides. Clasps q, of any desirable form, are provided, preferably toward the upper extremities of the guides D, for conveniently supporting the manuscript to be copied when the type-writer is not in use, for the purpose of taking down messages direct from the telegraphic receiving-instrument, and this position for the manuscript, being directly in front of the opcrator and at the proper height and distance, is much more desirable than the usual manu script-stand heretofore generally provided.
The operation of my device is as follows: The paper being inserted between the bedplate 0 and guides C will fall into position between the feed-roller and cylinder, and will. follow the course indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 on its passage through the machine. On reaching the part A the paper is deflected upward and backward, as usual, and enters the upward-projecting ears 0', which direct it to the delivery-guides D, the feeding and delivery of the paper-supply being thus rendered automatic.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a feed-guide for a type-writing machine having a bed'plate provided with lateral guides, of deliveryguides secured to the lateral guides to receive and guide the paper after passing through the machine, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a feed-guide for type writing machines having a bedplate provided with adjustable lateral guides, of delivery-guides secured to the adjustable lateral guides to receive and guide the paper after passing through the machine, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a feed-guide for type-writing machines, the combination of the bed-plate 0, having lateral guides, and holders q, for the manuscript, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a feed-guide for a type-writing machine having a bed-p1ate provided with lateral giudes, of delivery-guides 10 D, secured to the lateral guides and provided with upward-projecting ears 1', to receive and guide the paper after passing through the machine, as and for. the purpose set forth.
ADDISON O. THOMAS. In presence of- MASON Baoss, EDW'ARD THORPE.
