GARDEN-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,986, dated March 30, 1886.

Be it known that I, PAUL LEISTNER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Canopies for Garden-Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved canopy applied to a garden-table, showing the shade raised or opened. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the shade down or closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation of a portion of Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5 5, Figs. 4.

My invention is an improved canopy for a table intended for garden or outdoor use; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully describethand pointed out in the claims.

My invention relates to that class of canopies which simulate umbrellas or sunshades and to those canopies which are applied directl y to tables for support.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the table proper,supported on a base or legs, B,of any suitable construction or shape.

0 represents a sleeve, supported on the table in a vertical position. \Vithin this sleeve isa screw-threaded rod, D, supported through the table on a frame, I), on which it turns,

and is turned by means of a bevel-wheel, J,

on its lower end meshing into a similar wheel, I, on a horizontal shaft, L, journaled in hangers M, and provided with a crank-handle or winch, N, by which itis turned to revolve the rod or shaft D.

N represents the shade,which is in the form of an umbrella, the top being secured to the top of the sleeve 0, and rods 0, connecting its central part to a ring, P, surrounding the sleeve above an adjustable collar, T, on the shaft D, having aprojection, U, provided with Serial No. 166,682.

(No modeld a spur or hook, V, the projection extending through a slot, \V, in the sleeve. The ring I? rests upon this projection of the collar inside the spur V, and it will be seen that as the shaft D is turned the upward movement of the collar will raise or open the shade, and as the collar is lowered byturning the shaft in the other direct-ion the shade will fall or close, the ring preferably not being secured to but simply resting upon the collar, so that the shade can be raised without operating the screw or threaded shaft.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, with a table, of a sup port secured thereto, a canopy secured to the upper end of the support, a ring sliding up and down on the support, rods connecting the ring to the canopy,and an adjustable collar having a lug supporting the ring, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination,with a table, of asleeve having avertical slot and secured to the table, a canopy secured to the upper end of the sleeve, a ring sliding on said sleeve, rods connecting the ring to the canopy, a threaded shaft within the sleeve projecting downwardly through the table, frame secured to the table and supporting the lower end of the shaft, a collar working on the shaft and having a lug projecting through the slot to support the ring, and means by which the shaft is turned to raise and lower the collar for opening and closing the canopy, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with the table, slotted sleeve supported by the table, shade secured to the sleeve, threaded shaft within the sleeve, collar on the shaft with a lug projecting through the slot in the sleeve beneath a ring of the shade that surrounds the sleeve, and gearing for turning the threaded shaft whereby the shade is raised, as set forth.
