Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MONTAGUE, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PRINTINGHPRESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,897, dated December 10, 1861.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES MONTAGUE, of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings.
To enable others skilled'in the art to make and use the said improvement, I will proceed -to describe its construction and operation,
referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The cylinder A contains on its periphery the type-plates from which the impressions for the various colors are obtained, which plates are arranged in such positions on cylinderA that they are successively impressed on the sheet held by cylinder B in the manner hereinafter described. v
Cylinder'B is so geared with cylinder A that it makes four revolutions while cylinder A makes one and receives impressions from each quarter-section of cylinder A, on which the type-plates are so arranged as to bring each color to its desired place.
a b c d are rollers made of elastic material cast on wood journals and supply ink of the various colors desired in any well-known method of supplying and distributing ink. Each roller is supplied with rims or wheels on each end, corresponding with elevations or depressions e on cylinder A. Near each end of cylinder A are annular ridges corresponding in number with the inking-rollers employed, and each having depressions or elevations e around their circumferences for the purpose of raising and detaching the rollers from the face of the type-plate when the elevations are under the rollers which it is desired to detach, or allowing them to roll and ink the form it is desired to ink with the color with which the roller is supplied.
Cylinder B is supplied with grippers or other suitable mechanism, by which it catches and retains the sheet until the four revolutions are completed or the desired number of colors are printed.
F is the table or feed-board from which the sheets are supplied to the grippers.
D is an actuating-lever secured to the frame-work C, to one end of Whichis attached an arm 1l, extending through the frame. This arm i is thrown forward by the action of the lever for the purpose of opening the grippers at the completion of the printing by the revolutions of cylinder B. This leveri's operated in the manner above described by the cam E, attached to the head of cylinder A.
The cylinder B, by means of the grippers, seizes the sheet and retains it in its four revolutions,l successively presenting it for irnpression to the type-plates arranged on the different sections of cylinder A.
I have here described a press for printing four diiferent colors.
Motion being given to cylinder B, the grippers seize the sheet, which is brought in contact with each quarter-section of cylinder A and receives the color Which has been previously imparted to the type-plate on each section by the rollers ct b c cl successively in the manner before described, when at the fourth revolution of cylinder B the arm 't' is moved forward to open the grippers, and the sheet is released and the grippers ready for another sheet.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l l. The combination of two cylinders for letter-press printing in different colors, where by a sheet once fed to the small cylinder is printed with various colors before leaving the press, for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
2. Interchangeable ink-rollers, in combination with the cylinders A B to ink the different forms with different colors, for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
CHARLES MONTAGUE.
