H. C. WERDEN.
CHAIR.
Patented Mar. 30, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. VEEDEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,895, dated March 30,1886.
Application tiled November 14, 1885. Serial No. 182,817. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. VEEDEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Chairs, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of my invention is to furnish improvements in what are known as extension-chairs,77 in which the seat and back oi the chair are so arranged as to vary their angie as the seat is moved inward or outward, thereby better accommodating the chair to the position of the occupant.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a represent-ation in perspective of an eXtension-chair embodying my present improvelnents. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side -view in elevation and section on the line w m o1" Fig. 2.
In my improved extension-chair the backframe A, the bottom B, and the standard may be constructed as shown in the drawings, or in any other desired manner.
My improvement consists in combining with the back-frame A of the chair and the bottom B a supplementary back, C, in hinged connection with the back-frame, and a supplementary bottom, D, in extensible connection with thesupplementary back C, and arranged to slide in and out upon the main bottom B.
In the drawings I have represented the supplementary back O as secured to an upward extension of the back-frame, which extension prolongs the back of the chair, and may serve as a .head-rest, it' desired. The supplementary back C may, however, be in hinged connection directly with the backframe, and no extension or head-rest be provided.
To allow for the convenient sliding in and out upon the main bottom B of the supplementary bottom D, I have shown two guides, b, attached to the bottom B, in which guides, for convenience, are mounted anti-friction rollers c. These guides, also, I have represented as engaging with guiding ribs d, formed on the under side of the supplementary bottom D, the whole arrangement serving as a convenient means for securing the easy sliding to and fro of the supplementary bottom D without danger of displacement and It is evident,
without excessive friction.
however, that these details of construction may be varied or omitted at pleasure, some other suitable means being provided for giving the supplementary bottom D capacity of sliding in and out, as before explained. A suitable stop, e, may be attached to the sliding bottom D to regulate the extent of its forward motion, if desired.
The supplementary back O is so connected with the supplementary sliding bottom D as to move in and out with it substantially in the manner shown, the attachment being such as to permit of the convenient operation of the parts C and D in the manner already described. In the drawings I have represented for this purpose the simple form of connection consisting of rods E, (see Fig. 3,) attached to the supplementary seat D at the back, and sliding in and out in recesses e in the hinged supplementary back O. This construction readily permits the parts C and D to move together both backward and forward in the manner described; hut other devices for accomplishing this result may be substituted, if found desirable.
I claim- 1. In an extension-chair, the combination, with the main back-frame and the main bottom frame, of a supplementary back-frame and a supplementary bottom frame, the said supplementary back-frame being in hinged connection with the main back-frame and in extensible connection with the supplementary bottom frame, so as to move in and out with it, as set forth, and the said supplementary bottom frame being arranged to slide inwardly and outwardly upon the main bottom traine, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. In an extension-chair, the combination of the main back-frame A, the main bottom frame, B, provided with the guides b, supporting anti-friction rollers c, the supplementary back-frame U, and the supplementary sliding bottom D, provided with guide-ribs d, and with connection-rods E, working in recesses e in the hinged supplementary back-frame O.
In testimony whereof I lave hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day of November, A. D. 1,885.
HENRY O. VVEEDEN.
