UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB R. HESSLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED ORGAN AND SEWING-MACHINE.
EaLE'ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,740, dated March 30, 1886.
Application filed July '24, 1885. Serial No. 172,504.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB R. HESSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Organ and Sewing- Machine, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the organ. Fig. 2 is a front view of the sewing-machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the plane y y. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the plane 00 x of Figs. 1 and 2.
Like letters of reference denote like parts.
The object of my invention is to combine under one table or case both a sewing-machine and organ, and have an organ and a sewingmachine within the area usually required for the latter, with its usual drawers and a music case and rack with theformer. To attain this end,I construct the sewing-machine table kof about the usual area, with a part, (I, hinged to the back edge of the machine-table,to form the cover or lid to the keys of the organ, which are here shown, together with the entire action, at O. That part of the wind-producing mechanism a, usually called the vacuum, extends along the entire length of the organ in its upper part, but is divided into two parts in its lowerpart by a space or gap, 71, in which the trcadles f operate. The sides and top of the space 7L are cut out of the vacuum, are closed with leather or like flexible material, m, such as is used for like purposes in such places. On each side of the space it is an exhaust, I), attached on its inner edge to one of the trcadles f by means of a link, 9.
The position of the operating parts of the exhaust, vacuum, and treadles are indicated in two positions in dotted outlines in Fig. 3. A spring, Z, throws the vacuum into the position shown in full outline.
A music-rack, t, is attached to the lid (2, and it is held in its proper position for holding the music by the removable case E, forming the covering of the machine a. Said case is (No model.)
provided with pockets e,for holding the music, on one or both of its longitudinal sides, and is provided with doors 0,hinged to the case E at its bottom.
The shaft 1) has a free end, p, upon which the wheel 1 may be adjusted longitudinally to the pulley of the machine it, thus adapting this part of the construction to any machine 12 that it may be desired to place upon the table k, which table is constructed so as to receive and hold any form of machine a.
A longitudinal partition, 0", extending the entire length and height of the case A, separates the lower part of the machine into two independent apartments, which keep the air mechanism secure from harm and also stiffen the entire case.
IVhat I claim isl. A sewing-machine and organ combined, wherein the table It of the case A forms the table ofthe sewing-machine and cover (I of the organ, substantially as specified.
2. In an organ-action, the vacuum a, provided with space h, covered with flexible material m, in combination with the treadles f, substantially as specified.
3. The table it, provided with machine a and lid (2, in combination with the organ-action 0 and the mechanism to operate said action, substantially as specified.
4. The table 7t, provided with machine a, case E, having pockets c, and lid (2', in combination with the organ action 0 and the mechanism to operate said action, substantially as specified.
5. The case A, provided with wheel 1, adjustable longitudinally on its shaft, action 0, and level table It, having lid d, in combination with removable machine a, substantially as specified.
6. In an organ-bellows, the vacuum a, provided with a gap, 71., in combination with the treadles f and link 51, substantially as specified.
JACOB R. HESSLER.
