BUTTON.
No. 338,409. Patented Mar. 23, 1886.
. 'If w/ WINE/5; r lNvENTuR "Y f my" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. HEATH, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO CHARLES S. GOODWIN, OF NEW YORK, AND NOYES F. PALMER, OF JAMAICA, N. Y.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,409, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed October 30, 1885. Serial No. 181,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. HEATH, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button, of which the following speciiication is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to a button having a removable cap; and it consistsin the elements of construction hereinafter more fully pointed ro out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis acentral section of my button, showing the cap in its proper position.- Fig. 2 is a back View of the cap; Fig. 3, a back View of the head. I5 Fig. 4t is a section on line x x, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a section on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a back view of the cap and head, showing the parts at the time the cap is applied.
The letter a representsa cap, made of metal 2o or other suitable material. Itis of cup shape, Vas shown in Fig. l, and is surrounded by a ange, b. This flange is turned in or provided with a ledge, c, for a portion of its length. Opposite the ledge c the flange b is made of 2 5 slightly curved or tapering form, as shown at e in Fig. 1.
f represents the head of the button, made not entirely round, but slightly elongated or elliptical. At one edge the head is provided 3o with a bevel, g, as shown.
The usual cable or thread holes for attaching the button to the garment are made in the head f.
(No model.)
In order to apply the cap to the head, the former is placed around the head in the manner shown in Fig. 6-t-hat is to say, the beveled edge g is slipped beneath ledge c-and thus the minor axis ot' head f will be in line With the center of ledge c and taper e. The cap a is now revolved about one-quarter of a revolution, to bring the major aXis of head f in the line with ledge c and taper e. The cap will now be securely clamped in place, one end ofthe head being conflned beneath ledge c, while the other end frictions tightly against taper e. I form a small stud, h, Within cap a, to enter a slight depression, z', on headf when the parts are in their proper inal position. This stud prevents the cap from being turned too far.
I claim as my invention- -i In a button provided with a changeable face, the combination ofthe face a, recessed on its under side and provided with peripheral opposite ange portions, one of said flange portions carrying a lng on its under side With an elliptical base, f, provided with a notch or recess to engage with said lug, substantially as specified.
