UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
BURTON M. FISH, OF HAMBURG, NEW YORK.
N ECKTI E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,257, dated March 23, 1886.
' Application filed August 31. 1885. Serial No. 175,767. (No model.)
[0 (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BURTON M. FIsn, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners and I do hereby deelarethefollowingto beafull, clear, andexact description of theinventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in necktie-fasteners,which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the blank cut from sheet metal from which my improved necktiei'astener is made. Fig. 2 shows my improved necktie fastener complete. Fig. 3 shows its application to a stand-up collar. Fig. 4 shows its application to a turn-down collar, and Fig. 5 shows another application of the same to a stand-up collar.
Prior to my invention a wire frame with a central slot for the reception of the collarbutton, and end loops for the passage therelhrough of the ends of the necktie, has been used, in which the collar-button slot was so located that when the necktie and its fastener were in position the collar-button was hid from view.
My improved fastener, in addition to the above construction, includes a raised slot by means of which the collar-button may be exposed when the necktie is in position.
In the blank shown in Fig. 1, which is stamped out of sheet metal, a is the frame. a is the old form of collar-button slot, and a a are the end loops for the retention of the ends of the necktie. At the outer end of the extension a of the frame a is the auxiliary col- ]ar'button slot In Fig. 2 the end loops, a a are shown as bent at right angles to the frame a, making the complete fastener.
Fig. 3 shows the application of my improve ment to a stand-up collar, b, in which the raised COIIZLIEblllJtOIl slot at is in engagement with the collar-button c, which enables the collar-button to be exposed to view when the necktie (1, whose ends are passed through the loops a a", is tied into a bow. In this instance the lower and old form of collar-button sl0t,a', is not in use.
Fig. 4 shows my improved fastener as ap plied to a turn-down collar, 0, in the same manner as in Fig. 3, and exposing the collarbutton 0.
Fig. 5 shows the collar-button c resting in the slot a with a stand-up collar, in which position when the necktie is in place the collar-button is hidden from view. In this ap plication the raised collar-button slot a is not in use.
It will be obvious that with my improved construction the necktie-fastener is adapt-ed for both exposing and concealing the collarbutton when used with a stand-up collar, and for exposing the collar-button when used with a turn-down collar, it not being necessary to use it with a turn-down collar when it is desired to conceal the collar-button.
It is obvious that my improved construction might be made from wire; but I prefer the form shown and described as the most desirable.
I claim 1. A necktie-fastener consisting of the frame (1, provided with the collar-button slot a, the extension a, having the auxiliary collar-button slot (4 and the end loops, at a", substantially as and for the purpose stated.
2. A necktie-mstenm' consisting of the frame a, provided with the raised button-slot aiand the end l0ops,a a substantially as and for the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BURTON M. FISH.
