EGBERT G. snss1ons, OF man, TEXAS.
CAR-GOUPLING.
SPEGII'I'CATION forming part of Lette m Patent N0. 338,107, dated March 16, 1886.
Applieation filed J anuary 9, 1886. Serial N0. 188,131. (N0 model.)
Be it known bhat I, EGBER'I G. SESSIONS, a citizen of the United Stabes, residing als Rice, in the county of Navarro and Sbate of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in OanOonplings, of which lahe following is a speoification.
My invention relates 130 a car-coupling in which the opposite draw-heads are provided Wit;h interlooking projeelsions and connected loy a horizontal pin or pins.
The invention eonsisbs in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter speoified.
In the annexed. drawings, Fignre 1 is a plari view of a car-coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section 0f the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of ehe coupling. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of a box-car provided witl1 my improved ooupling atlaachn1ents.
Referring 130 bhe drawings, lshe lebten A designates a draw-head, with extension B anal spring O als its rear end. Eaoh draw-head is provioled ab one side With an end projeetion, D, which is reotangnlar in form. This real:- angnlar prdjection D is provided near the bocl y ofthe draw-head with a horizontally-elonganed opening or passage, E, ancl near its ouiser end said projection has avertieal slot, F, the walls ofsaid slots being ronnded internally, as shown in Fig. 3. 'lhe unter end of each draw-head. also carries a wedge shaped projeobion, G, which has a horizontallyelongatecl sich, E, through its enlarged end, and a vertical slot, F, through its small end, the interior of said slots 01 openings being rounded. The wedgeshaped projection G has a horizontal top and bottom surface. One side is parallel with the side ofohe recbangular projecbion, and its other side is inolined forward. This wedge-shaped projection Gis located near oneside ofhe drawhead, opposite 110 and in line with the rectangular pro j ection D, Which is preferably locat-ed directly on the obher side edgeofthe draw-head. The conpling-pins H H are passed horizontally through ehe inberlooking projections D and G fron1 opposite sides of the draw-heads, each pin being engaged in the horizontal slots E E in the projections of one draw-head, and. in the verbical slots F F in the projeclgions of the opposite draw-head. 111 will be observed that the olose engagement 0f each horizontal coupling-pin ab tw0 point-s in Ehe draw-head 130 whicl1 in is atlsached seoures a firn1 and steady drafta, while ohe loose or flexible engagement; of said pins with the opposite draw-heads enables the oars 120 tnrn curves readily wilshout liability of derailment. By meansof tl1e vertical slots F F in the encls of the projeetions Band G an up-and-down motion is permibted to the pin H, held in the horizontal slots E E 0f the opposite dr aw head. 'lhis coupling is therefore adapted to connectz cars having draw-heads of differenb height-s, as well as those that are arranged on a level. Bach coupling-pin H is oarriecl at the lower e11d 0f a vertical rod, K, that is pivoted ab L 110 the end of a freight-car 01' to a convenienb point on the platform of a passengencar. In order 130 hold the rod 01 lever K in any desired position, raoks m m are provided, Wibh which said rod 01 leve1 can be engaged. Thisrod or lever K may extend to the top of a freight-oar and the raoks m be locabed upon the top 0f the car, as shown in Fig. 4:.
II: will be seen thal: Witl1 tl1is constrnction and arrangernent of defices cars of the same or difierenl; heights can be easil y and quicl l y coupled and unconpled eitaher from the top or platal'orm 0f a car, or fron1 either'side, wibhout any risk of injnry to the abtendant.
Whal: I olaim as my invention is The eombinalsion, with Ehe draw-heads provided with projeclzions D and G, each having ab its inrier porlaion a horizontally-elongatecl slot, and ab it s outer portion a verLically-elongated slob, of l;he horizontally-slidable coupling-pins H H, f0r respecbively engaging the said slobs, substantially as desoribecl.
In testixnony whereof Iaffix 1ny signature in presence of two witnesses.
EGBERT G. SESSIONS.
