UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FRIEDRICH HANNEMAN, OF AHNAPEE, WISCONSIN.
STEAM ER.
TeP-EGIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,064, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed June 8, 1885. Serial No. 168,080. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES FRIEDRICH HANNEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ahnapee, in the county of Kewaunee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steamers, of which the following is a description.
This invention is an improvement in steamers for use in stoves and ranges, and has for an object to provide a device which may be conveniently used in any ordinary oven, and will efficiently serve its purpose.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical 1ongitudinal section of a stove with my improvement in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the steam-generator, and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view representing the improvement in use in a range.
The vessel A is formed with its inner side plate a, preferably tapering inwardly from its upper to its lower edge, in order to provide a larger space in the oven at the bottom than at the top of the device, the pans in which articles are cooked being larger and requiring more room than the articles themselves, as is understood. The lateral plates B are extended one from each end of and lateral to the tank, and are made sufficiently large to, with the addition of the tank, completely fill the upper door-opening or the upper part of the door-opening when but a single door opens into the oven on each side, and thus prevent the exit of steam when the ovendoor is opened. I prefer to use two of these guard-plates, as ordinarily ovens have two doors similar to and oppositeIeach other; but for use in ovens having but a door or doors on but one side only one guard-plate may be provided. These guard-plates may be braced by a rod, 0, extending between their outer lower edges, as shown.
It will be noticed-that the upper edge of the front plate, a, of the water-vessel is shown slightly below the upper edge of the lateral guard-plate. The object in this construction is to permit the steam to circulate into the oven when the top thereof fits flush onto the vessel and the guard-plate.
From the top and side edges of the guardplates flanges Z) are projected at right angles inward. These flanges,it will be seen, operate in a measure to prevent the egress of steam when the device is moved partially through the doorway to expose one end of the watervessel in order to refill the same as may be desired.
In one of the guard-plates I provide asmall door, D, by which access may be had to the articles being cooked when such articles are supported in approximately the plane of the base of the steamer-as, for instance, on the shelf supporting the latterin order to turn the said articles,or for other purposes desired, without necessitating the movement of the steamer. This door may be partly isinglass when so desired. My improvement,it will be seen, is simple and may be used in any of the ordinary ovens. The end configuration of the steamer will correspond to that of the oven-doorway, as will be understood.
It is a well-known fact that bread, cakes, meats, 850., can be more successfully baked when steamed during the action of baking. The meats will be more juicy, and the cake and bread are given a better and richer color, and will be more spongy and contain a greater quantity of moisture.
In practice the steamer may be supported on the ribs or guides usually provided in the upper portions of ovens to receive shelves, or the device may be moved directly in on one of such shelves, as will be understood.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with a steaining-vessel, of a guard-plate extended laterally from one end thereof, and a flange projected horizontally inward from the top and side edges of said guard-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. A steamer comprising a vessel, a guardplate extended laterally therefrom and having the portion adjacent the vessel of equal height therewith, and a door in said guardplate, substantially as set forth.
3. A steamer having a vessel and a guardplate extended laterally therefrom and having the portion adjacent the vessel of equal equal height therewith, flanges extended inheight therewith, the upper edge of the inner wardly from the top and side edges of the.
plate of said vessel being located below the guard-plates, and a brace-rod extended beupper edge of the guard-plate, substantially tween said guard-plates, substantially as set 5 as set forth. forth.
4. The steamer herein described, consisting of the vessel having its inner plate inclined, CHARLES FRIEDRICH HANNEMM.
as described, the guard-plates extended later- WVitnesses: ally from the opposite ends of the vessel and J NO. KAREL, 10 having their portions adjacent the same of I LOUIsE OVERBEOK.
