IRONING TABLE.
No. 337,686. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.
IN'VEIITOR WITNESSES W XMM ATTORNEYS;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS N. JOHNSON, OF ROME, NEXV YORK.
lRONlNG-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,686, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed April 4, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. JOHNSON, of Rome, Oneida county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved ironing-table, which is simple in construction, strong, and durable, which can be folded very compactly, and
which has a protector or apron to prevent the articles being ironed from coming in contact with the floor.
The invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts and details as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of my improved ironing-table. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line or m, Fig. 1, the table being erected. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the same folded.
Plates A, having lugs A and curved prongs B, which project beyond the end edge of the ironing-board O, are secured to the under side of the said board at one end.
To the lugs A bars D are pivoted, which are bent toward each other at the opposite ends and pivoted to a leg, E, near its bottom, which leg has a cross-piece, F, at its top. The bars D are united by the cross-pieces G and H, of which the latter is curved downward, and is near the lower ends of the said bars D. A frame, J, is pivoted to the bars D at the curves, and on the said frame a piece of fabric, K, is secured. A cord or strap, L, is secured to the cross-piece G and to the swinging or free end of the frame J. The upper edge of the bars D are united by a flat cross-piece, M, below the leg E, and in a slot, E, in the said leg E a hook-latch, N, is pivoted, which is acted upon by a spring, 0.
In the under side of the board 0 a recess, P, is formed for securing the cr0ss-piece M, and a recess, Q, having a projection or ledge, R.
The table is ad'usted in the following manner: The edge of the top S of a kitchen or Serial No. 161,201.
(No model.)
other table is passed between the under side of the board 0 and the ends of the prongs B, as shown in Fig. 2. The bars D are swung down and the cross-piece F on the leg E is swung up against the under side of the board 0. vVhen the leg E is vertical, the catch N catches on the cross-piece M on the bars D and locks the several parts in place. The frame J drops and forms a pocket for receiving parts of shirts, table-cloths, 810., to prevent their trailing on the ground.
To fold the board, the frame J is swung between the bars I), the latch N is disengaged from the cross-piece M, the leg E is swung on the cross-piece H, and the bars D are swung against the under side of the board O. The latch N catches on the ledge R on the under side of the board 0 and locks the several parts in place, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the ironing-board O, and the prongs B, fixed on the under side of the same, of the bars D, pivoted at their ends to the ironingboard, and the leg E, pivoted to said bars a short distance above the lower end of the leg, the lower end of the leg resting on the floor and the upper end supporting the free end of the ironing-board, substantial] y as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the ironing-board O, of the prongs B, the bars D, pivoted to the board, the leg E, pivoted to the bars D, and the frame J, pivoted to the barsv D, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the ironing-board O, of the bars D, the leg E, pivoted to the same, the cross-piece M on the bars D, and the spring-catch N on the leg, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the ironing-board 0, having the recesses P and Q, the latter having a ledge, R, of the pivoted bars D, the leg E, pivoted t1. the same, the cross-piece M on the bars D, and the spring-catch N on the leg E, substantially as herein shown and de scribed.
THOS. N. JOHNSON. WVitnesses:
G. M. PALMER, F. H. OXNER.
