BENJAMIN N. MERRILL, OF LISBON, MAINE.
WASH-BOARD HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,601, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed June 5, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN N. MERRILL, of Lisbon, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved \Vash Board Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved holder or attachment for wash-boards for the purpose of preventing the board from slipping upward in the tub.
The invention consists in a bar for attachment to the sides of the board, on each ofwhich pieces a swinging arm-piece is held, the said piece having a ball-head on its outer end. The heads rest against the inner sides of the tub and prevent the wash-board sliding or slipping upward in the tub.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tub provided with the wash-board holder and of the tub in which the board is placed. Fig. 4 isa cross-sectional elevation of the same.
A strip, A, having its ends B beveled, is provided withalongitudinal groove, 0, which is circular in cross-section, and the front ridge, formed by the groove 0 on the strip A, has a series of notches or recesses, D D, between which lugs E are formed. A forked piece or arm, F, the shanks of which diverge, is provided at the closed end with a ball-head, I, and at the inner or separated ends of the shanks each shank has a laterally-projecting pin or pivot, H, fitting in the groove 0. That ridge provided 'with the notches D is higher than the other.
A strip, A,is secured on the outer surface of each side bar of the wash-board J.
The pivots H are held in the grooves O, and the forked pieces F project from the strip A.
Serial No. 167,804. (Model.)
The wash-board is placed in the tub K, the heads I resting against the inner surface of the tub, and by frictional contact hold the washboardin such a manner that it cannot slide upward when the clothes, &c., are rubbed on the same.
When the tub is large, the pieces F are adjusted near the upper end of the strips A, and when the tub is smaller the pieces F are placed nearer the lower ends of the strips A. The holder can thus be used on tubs of different diameters.
The lugs E pass in between the prongs of the pieces F, and thus hold thepieces or arms in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a wash-board, of grooved strips on the same, pieces'or arms projecting from the strips, and of ball-heads on the ends ofthe pieces, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with agrooved strip having notches, of a piece or arm having pivots on one end and a ball-head on the other end, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a grooved strip having notches on one oftheridges formed by the groove, of a forked piece having pivots at the open ends, and a ball-head on the outer end, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. A wash-board attachment consisting of a strip provided with swinging arms having ball heads on the outer ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
BENJAMIN N. MERRILL.
