CH ECK- HOOK.
;BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,563, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed July 13, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DARLING, of Karns City, in the count-y of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Hooks for Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in my new check-hook covered by Letters Patent No. 310,034, which were granted to me December 30, 1884; and the present invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved check-hook, showing the parts thereof separated from each other; and Fig. 2 is a sec tional view of the same, the parts being assembled. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 and showing the hook moved forward in full lines and retracted in dotted lines.
A represents the back-pad or the tree of a harness. B is the check-hook proper, and 0 represents the saddle to the back-pad. The hook B is formed with the plate a, that slides in an opening or slot, 6, between the back-pad A and saddle C. To the plate a is attached the strap 0, that reaches back to the vehicle, for operating the check-hook to check up and uncheck the horse without the necessity of leaving the vehicle, as hereinafter described. When the check-hook B is drawn back to the position shown in Fig. 1the position for checking up the horseit is locked in that position by a fastening device or pawl, (Z, en tering the cavity 9, made in the plate a of the hook. The pawl d is placed in a cavity, f, made in the back-pad, and is normally held elevated by the coiled springi, placed beneath the pawl, as shown. A projection or lip, d, is formed at the rear edge of the pawl d, and in another cavity, 9, made back of the cavity f, containing the pawl d, and joining the same, is placed a sliding plate, h, formed \\ith a lip, h, at its front edge, and a rib or lug, h, at its upper surface. This sliding plate is pressed upward by a small curved plate-spring, 3',

placed beneath it. Upon the under surface of the plate a of the check-hook B is formed the small lug a, that is adapted to ride over the lug h on the sliding plate h, when the check-hook is drawn backward for unchecking the horse.
Ina cavity, 7;, in front of the pawl d is placed a bent spring, Z, that is adapted to engage with a pin or stud, a, at the edge of the plate a, so that a tension will be put on spring Z, when the check hook is drawn backward which will react when the strap a is released by the driver and suddenly throw the hook forward.
The action is as follows: When the hook B is drawn backward, the pawl (1 will be depressed and forced downward out of the cavity 6. At the same time the lug (tof plate a will ride over the lug If of the sliding plate h, and also at that time a tension will be put upon the spring Z by the pin a being drawn back against it. Now, upon releasing the strap c of the check-hook the spring Z will react and force the hook forward and slide the plate h forward, so that the lip h thereof will come over the lip d of the pawl (Z and hold it in its depressed position, in which position it will not interfere with the movement of the check-hook B forward in the opening b to uncheck or give freedom to the horses head. The horse being thus unchecked, in order to check him up again it is only necessary to draw backward the strap 0, which will return the hook B to its original position, and the lug a of the plate a, engaging the lug h on the sliding plate 71, will draw it back in its cavity to disengage lip h thereof from lip d of the pawl d, leaving the latter free to be forced upward by its spring 6 to re-enter the cavity 0 in the plate a, for locking the check-hook in checked position, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The back-pad or tree, A, provided with a locking-pawl, and means, substantially as described, for operating the same, in combination with a notched check-hook adapted to slide in a slot in the pad or tree, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The back-pad providedwith lockingpawl (Z and sliding plate 71, in combination with the eheek'hook B, sliding between the 0, provided with pin a, and formed with the pad and saddle and adapted to be engaged log a, the pawl being formed with lip d and I0 by the pawl, the sliding plate being adapted the sliding plate with lip h and lug h, subto lock the pawl in depressed position, subsiantially as and for the purposes set forth. 5 stantialiy as and for the purposes set forth. JOSEPH DARLING.
3. The pad provided with a spring locking- W'itnesses: pawl, d, sliding piste l1, and springs z j Z. in
L. B. LUPHER, combination with the check-hook recessed at W. J. RODGERS.
