CALIPERS AND DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,531, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed July 2'1. 1885. Serial No. 172,831.
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicopee Falls, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dividers and Calipers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of dividers, calipers, or other analogous instruments wherein a spring is employed to separate the legs or arms; and it consists of a certain improvementin the construction by which the spring is connected to the legs, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a pair of dividers constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a pair of outside calipers. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the legs near thejoint and of the spring separated and drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is a side elevation ofthespring removed, and Fig. 6 is a cross-section cut on the line 6 6 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, let A'A desigmate the legs or arms of the dividers or calipers, B the spring for separating them, and O the screw and D the nut for drawing them together. The screw and nut may be constructed in any known way, as they form no part of the present invention. The legs A A may also be hinged or pivoted together at the head E in any known or suitable way.
The spring Bis a C-spring, made of curved plate, and arranged around and inclosing the head E, its ends coming down and joining the outer sides of the legs below the head. The ends of the spring are formed each with a rounded or cylindrical rib or bead, b b turning outwardly. Each leg A is made with a curved hook, a, curving upwardly and inwardly, and forming within it a cylindrical socket, 0, adapted to receive the bead b on the spring. The spring is connected to the legs by compressing it and sliding its heads I) b endwise into the sockets c c. The ends of the spring tend to spring apart and so press outwardly against the hooks a (1,
whereby they (No model.)
communicate their tension to the legs A A. The spring is held in place and prevented from being slipped out laterally by means ol'a screw, d, which is passed through one of the legs from the inside, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and in full lincsin Fig. 6, and the end of which enters anotch, e, in the bead b on one end 01 the spring shown in Fig. 5.
I am aware that a C-spring has before beer applied to dividers and calipers, its ends be ing provided with eyes, being bifurcated l'.( embrace the legs, and having pins passer through their eyes and through holes in tht legs. This construction necessitates making the spring considerably wider than the thick ness of the legs at the points of their attach ment, which is undesirable. My improvemen avoids this necessity and dispenses with th pins, making a. neater and simpler connection My invention is equally well adapted to in side calipers and to compasses and other analt gous instruments.
that I claim as new, and desire to seen: by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the legs of a pa of dividers, calipers, or other analogous ll strnnients formed with outside hooks, a a, t a. C-spring, the ends of which tend to pre: outwardly and are engaged by said hooks, snl stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with legs A A, havir hooks a a on their outer sides, forining socke c c, of spring B, its ends formed with IOLlIldt ribs or beads b b. entering said sockets, su stantially as set forth.
3. The combination of legs A A, havi: hooks a a on their outer sides, spring B, ha ing its ends formed to engage said hooks, a notched at e, and a screw, d, entering sa notch, substantially asset forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto sign my name in the presence of two subscribi witnesses.
JOSHUA srnvnns \Vitnesses:
MERVIN H. BARNES, Jos PH L. BEAUPRE.
