GODFREY ll. LASAR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI,
LOCKING DEVICE FOR KEY-BOARDS OF TYPE-WRITING MACHlNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent P10336725, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed March 2,1885.
To (1,55 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY H. LAsAR, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices for Key-Boards of Transmitters, TypeW'i-iting Machines, &c. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved locking apparatus. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections showing the parts in different positions. Fig. 4 illustrates a modification.
My invention relates to an improved looking device to be applied to key-boards of telegraphtransmitters, type-writing machines, 820.; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully dcscribcd, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a base supporting a number of keys, B, on a shaft, 0, journaled in posts D, the keys rocking on the shaft, or the shaft rocking in its bearings, or they (the keys) may be supported by other suitable means. They are held in their upper position (except when depressed in the operation of the machine) by suitable springs, I. They are provided with slots or recesses J, which receive, as the keys are depressed, the upper edge of a hinged frame or flap, L, secured to the base by boxes M, or other suitable means.
I have shown the frame consisting of a plate with an upper and lower bead, but do not confine myself to any particular form of frame. I have shown it held in its upright or normal position by a spring, N, surrounding a pin, 0, secured to the base, and provided with a head, 3?, and passing through a plate or projeetion, 'l, of the frame, the spring being located between the projection and the head of the pin, as shown. By screwing the head up or down the tension of the spring is regulated.
Serial X0. 157,494. (No model.)
I do not wish to confine myself to this means for holding the frame in a vertical position, except when operated by the keys. The slots or recesses J are inclined, as shown, and when akey is operated the slot engaging over the upper edge of the frame tilts the frame from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, when it will be out of line of the slots of all of the other keys, which are thus prevented from being operated until the key that has been operated returns to its upper or normal position, and then the frame is drawn back to a vertical position by the spring J, and then another key can be operated. Thus the object of my invention is to provide an improved means that will, when one key of a telegraph-transmitter, type-writer, or similar machine is operated, prevent another key from being operated until the letter of the first key is fully completed and the key has returned or nearly returned to its normal position.
In Fig. 4: a modified form of frame is shown, which consists of a rock-shaft with two wings, against the lower one of which the descending key strikes and rocks the shaft, throwing the other wing forward out of line of the slots of the other keys to prevent them being operated.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a hinged flap and keys having recesses over said flap.
2. The combination of a hinged flap, a spring to return said flap, and keys having recesses over said flap.
3. The combination of the hinged liap having a projection, pin passed through said projection, head adjustable on said pin, spring located between said projection and said head, and keys having recesses over said flap.
G ODFBEY H. LASAR.
