To all whom, it mayconccrn:
Be it known that I, GILBERT W. SHERIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates particularly to typewriting machines which have a practical usefulness for various purposes, but are more especially intended for the amusement and instruction of children.
The object of the invention is to produce a type-writing machine of this character which shall be accurate and reliable in operation, shall be compact and conveniently handled, and shall be capable of manufacture at low cost.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which it is illustrated, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved type-writing machine. Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the same with the type-disk removed. Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section on the plane indicated by the line 3 3of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line i 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of parts to be referred to hereinafter.
A base-plate a is provided for and forms a part of the machine, being intended to rest upon and to cover the paper or other surface written upon and being provided with a longitudinal slot 6, through which the printing of a line of characters may be effected, the paper or other printing-surface being guarded by the base-plate from contact with any parts of the machine which carry ink.
The opposite edges of the base-plate a are turned over upon themselves, as at c, to form a guard for the carriage d, which supports the type-wheel and is movable upon the plate to permit characters to be printed successively in line. The carriage is provided with an aperture 6, registering with the slot 6 in the base-plate a and permitting only a single type character to make contact with the printing-surface when the type-wheel is depressed. This aperture 6 when a type-disk of the character of that represented in the drawings is employed is preferably formed in a separate shield-strip f, which is secured at-its ends to the carriage (Z at the corresponding ends of a long slot g, which is formed in said carriage. The shield f is more flexible than the carriage and thinner, thereby permitting the type-disk to approach more closely the surface of the paper. To prevent the contact of the shieldstrip with the freshly-printed surface, it may be formed on one edge and at one side of the printing-aperture 6 with a narrow flange h, which prevents thecontact of the shield with the freshly-printed surface.
The carriage (Z is provided with a suitable bearing, such as the stud z', for the support of the printing-disk k, which may be of any suitable character, and it is also connected by cord or belt Z with aspring-actuated drum m, mounted in suitable bearings on the base-plate a, whereby the carriage (Z is drawn to the right.
For the purpose of permitting a step-bystep movement of the carriage 0? toward the right during the operation of printing, and as the type-disk is pressed by the finger of the operator to print the desired character, the base-plate a is provided with a rack 11, which may be conveniently formed on the edge of the lower flange 0 of the base-plate a. For cooperation with the rack there is pivoted upon the carriage d an escapement-lever 0, formed with teeth 0 and 0 and acted upon by a spring 19 to press the tooth 0' normally into engagement with the rack n. The escapement-lever is also provided with a finger 0 preferably inclined, as shown in Fig. 4:, for cooperation with the operating lever or arm '4 The latter is arranged to be actuated by the operation of the printing-disk 7c and may be formed with a fulcrum q to bear upon the carriage d. The operating lever or arm q may be carried by a supporting-arm r, which is mounted upon the carriage (Z. This arm may have its ends turned down, as at r, to rest and rock upon the carriage, and is preferably a spring-arm, so that-when depressed by the operation of the printing-disk it will return to its normal position when the pressure upon the printing-disk is relieved, carrying with it the operating arm or lever q. The supporting arm and the operating arm or lever are preferably secured together at their intersection and are centered and maintained in position by the stud a, which enters an aperture c" in one or both of the arms.
The supporting arm or bar r may also carry one or more inking-pads r for cooperation with the type on the type-disk.
In the operation of the improved machine, the type-disk being in position and the carriage having been drawn to the left, the type disk is rotated to the proper position and pressure is applied thereto over the printingpoint. This action causes a depression of the upper or free end of the operating-lever q, the supporting arm or bar 7 yielding to the pressure and also rocking on the carriage. The elevation of the rear end of the lever act ing upon the finger 0 on the escapement-lever 0 rocks the latter upon its pivot, raising the tooth 0 out of engagement with the rack n and throwing the tooth into engagement therewith. The teeth 0 and 0 are so spaced that when the pressure upon the type-disk is relieved, the operating-lever permitted to return to its normal position, and the escapement-lever restored by the spring 19 to its normal position the tooth 0 of the escapement-lever will strike upon the upper surface of that tooth of the rack from which it has been disengaged and will slide down thereon into engagement with the next tooth of the rack, thereby permitting the advance of the carriage d by one letter-space, so that at the next operation of the type-disk the character printed will bear the proper relation to the character previously printed. When the line has been completed, the entire machine is moved into position for another line, the carriage is drawn to the left to the desired position for beginning the new line, and the operations are repeated, as before. It will be observed that the letter-spacing in the line is not dependent upon the care of the operator, but is determined accurately by the rack and escapement. Furthermore, the mechanism is extremely simple and is not only inexpensive to manufacture, but is not of such a character as to get out of order easily. The Whole machine also is simple in construction, strong, and durable.
I claim as my invention- 1. A type-writing machine, comprising a base-plate slotted in the printing-line, a carriage movable thereon, a type-disk supported upon the carriage, said carriage being slotted in the line of print, and a flexible shield secured to the carriage in the line of its slot and having a printing-aperture, substantially as described.
2. A type-writing machine, comprising a base-plate slotted in the printing-line, a carriage movable thereon and also slotted in the line of print, a type-disk mounted on said carriage, and a flexible shield secured upon the carriage in line with its slot and provided with a printing-aperture and with a flange on its under side to prevent contact with the printed surface, substantially as described.
3. A type-writing machine, comprising a base-plate, a carriage movable thereon, a typedisk on the carriage, means to draw the carriage in one direction, a rack carried by the base-plate, an escapement on the carriage to cooperate with the said rack, and means actuated directly by the type-wheel to operate said escapement, substantially as described.
4. A type-writing machine, comprising a base-plate, a carriage movable thereon, a typedisk on the carriage, means to move the carriage in one direction, a rack carried by the base-plate, an escapement-lever mounted on the carriage, and an operating-lever for said escapement lever actuated directly by the type-disk, substantially as described.
5. A type-Writing machine, comprising a baseplate, a carriage movable thereon, a-typedisk mounted on the carriage, means to move the carriage in one direction, a rack-bar carried by the base-plate, an escapement-lever mounted on the carriage and having a finger, an operating-lever to cooperate with said fing'r and a supporting-arm for said operatinglever, whereby the lever is actuated directly by the type-disk, substantially as described.
