Be it known that I, I'IALBERT EDWIN PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ty elVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in typewriting machines, and consists. as hereinafter more fully set forth, in the general organism of the machine and in certain features of construction, whereby an exceedingly simple machine is produced, which can be manufactured at a low cost and which approaches in general arrangement and relation of its parts to commercial writing machines, while operating on a different and much simpler principle.
This invention not only embodies the elements of a complete writing machine, enabling the operator to produce commercial tvpewritten work, but also teaches be- 0 ginners the arrangement of the standard keyboard and the construction and operation of the essential elements of such machines. The machine is so constructed and arranged as to be easily operable by those unaccustomed to the operation of standard writing machines.
This invention belongs in that class of machines wherein a type carrier is movable, by means of an index, longitudinally past a printing point to select and bring into printing position the part of the type carrier on which is located the desired character, so that a printing plunger, independently operated, may cause the character to be impressed on the paper. More particularly, the present machine employs a horizontally elongated flexible type band, located in front of the impression surface and movable lengthwise parallel thereto to select the desired character and tiltable forward and backward toward and from the impression surface in the printing operation. The flexible band is mounted on a rigid slide, which is movable across the machine by a bodily movable index and is tiltable toward and from the impression surface by the impression-producing mechanism, the connection between the index and slide being such that Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings, 1 is a base'or supporting plate, approximately rectangular in shape, and provided with guide ways 2-2 in which is made to slide, transversely ofthe machine, a paper carriage 3 consisting of a sliding plate 4 notched at its forward edge to form a letter space rack 5, the teeth of which are of a distance apart to regulate the letter space of the machine, and having upright standards 6 at each end in which are formed bearings for a feed roll 7 designed to carry and feed the paper 8 to be printed on, and the paper is pressed against the feed roll 7 by a presser and guide plate 9.
The feed roll 7 is actuated by means of a knurled hand wheel 10 mounted on the extended shaft of the feed roll 7. The paper, after leaving the feed roll, is fed up past an impression plate 11, held in a vertical position and extending from end to end of the carriage and curved backward to overlie the carriage and form a table 12. These several parts of the paper carriage being well known and their uses so familiar to the users of typewriters, a further description is deemed unnecessary.
At the central part of the base 1 and forward of the position occupied by the paper carriage is erected a post or standard 13 in which is pivoted a printing or impression arm 14 which latter is adapted to be actuated by a key lever 15 pivoted in an upin a swinging right post 16 mounted on the base 1 of the machine. and this lever 15 is made to extend to one side of the machine and terminate in a finger key 17 Between the printing arm l-f and the impression plate 11 of the carriage is mounted a type carrier 18 comprising a strip of flexible material 19 having on its face a series of raised characters 20 preferably arranged in two rows corresponding with the upper and lower case of a font of printers type and this strip is itself mounted by means of a rectilinear plate 21 on a bar 22 and to the rear of the strip 19 is attached a projecting notched strip 23, the notches 241 being spaced to correspond with the spacing between the printing characters 20 and this notched strip 23 is so located with reference to the pivotal bearing of the type carrier that when the impression arm 14: is moved forward to cause the type to print its forward edge first will enter the notch 24; opposite the character which has been made and to more positively accomplish this object the front edge of the impression arm 14: is rounded where it enters the plate 23. The type carrier 18, as a whole, is mounted frame 25 consisting of parallel arms 26 pivoted to standards attached to the base 1 of the machine and has a later' provided with a of which the frame ally extending arm 27 finger key 28 by means may be vibrated on its pivotal bearings for the type shift.
At their forward ends the arms 26 of the shift frame are formed into recesses 29 so shaped as to receive the bar 22 of the type carrier and permit a fore and aft vibration of the plate 21 on which is mounted the type carrying flexible strip 19 and the type carrier will have a longitudinal movement from side to side of the machine so that any the carrier may be point of the maone of the characters on brought to the printing chine opposite the impression arm by reason of a movement of the impression arm forced against the paper of the iin pression plate of the paper carriage. Since the holder for the flexible type band is moved away from the impression surface after each impression, the printed character is rendered visible. In other words, the machine is a visible writer. The selection of the character to be impressed on the paper is controlled by means of a selecting device consisting of a bail 30 with trunnion ends 31 inserted in the two ends of the type carrier bar 22 and provided with an operating arm 32 having a grip or finger piece 33 and made to extend forward of the machine over a keyboard 34: laid out and marked to represent the keyboard of a standard typewriter, having the several characters used in the machme marked on its surface either 11 and, 7

Between the type carrier 18 and the paper carriage is hinged an ink pad plate 52, pref-. eraby channel. 53 at its lower edge to form a bearing by which it may be mounted on the bar 22 of the type carrier between the arms 26 of the shift frame, and inkvpads 54: are attached to the face of the plate 52 in line with the type faces on the type carrier.
The plate 52 is cut away, as at 55, to permit the passage of the selected type to the paper and an arm 56 is made to project rearwardly from the lower edge of the plate, and a spring 57 is attached at one end to the arm 56 and at the other to the frame of the machine and so tensioned as to tend at all times to withdraw the plate 52 from the printing surface and to maintain the ink pads in contact with the type faces on the type carrier. Between the ink pad plate 52 and the printing surface is mounted a flexible guard plate 58 made of spring metal and attached to the base 1 of the machine and having an opening 59 of a size to perm t the passage of the type selectedt'o print.
By reason of thefiexible character of this plate and its resiliency it will alwaysftend to maintain its normal position. removed from the printing surface but will be moved in towardthe printing point at each move ment of the type to print and will permit the character selected to reach the paper and no other character can reach the paper. It will be observed that the forward and backward movement of the ink-pad plate 52 and of the plate 58 also operates to render the machine a visible writer. The ink-pad plate .52 itself constitutes a guard plate, so that, i
f desired, the plate 58 couldbe omitted.
In order to provide for the letter space movement of the paper carriage so that the paper will be carried by the printing point with an intermittent movement, one letter space at each movement, of the printing arm to print a sliding pawl 36 (see Fig; 8) of peculiar form is mounted on the base 1 formed as shown in Fig. 3, having a and this pawl is guided at one end by a pin 37 projecting up from the base 1- and at the other end by a guide plate 38, and an actuating arm 39 depending from a rocking frame 40 pivoted on the frame of the machine,preferably on the post 16 on which the printing lever 15 is mounted and by the same pivot pin, and this rocking frame 40 is provided with an arm 41 projecting parallel with the printing lever 15 and having a lip 42 projecting over and in the working path of said lever 15 so that when the lever is actuated to print it will cause the frame 40 to vibrate on its pivotal bearing and through its arm 39 which engages the letter space pawl, actuate the paper carriage and give it an endwise movement.
The engagement of the arm 39 with the pawl 36 is by means of a diagonal slot 43 in the latter, as shown in Fig. 8, and the beveled slot *3 is for the purpose of causing the arm 39 while moving in one direction to tend to withdraw the pawl tooth from the rack on the paper carriage and when moving in the other direction to tend to drive the pawl tooth into the said rack, and a tension spring 4:4 is connected at one end to the sliding pawl by means of a pin 45 and at the other end to the frame of the machine.
On the forward edge of the sliding pawl 36 is formed a tooth 46 adapted to engage the rack 5 on the carriage and a reciprocation of the pawl by means of the parts actuated by the printing lever will cause the carriage to be moved along with a-step by step movement as the printing is done. The rear side of the sliding pawl is beveled as at 47 and a beveled stop 38 is attached to the base and these parts are so adjusted that when the carriage is moved along to the letter space distance the pawl will be stopped and interlock with the carriage rack to prevent any possible overthrow and also maintain the position of the carriage against any accidental disturbance until the next letter is selected and printed. A space lever 49 is pivoted to a post 50 and is provided with a finger plate or key 51 at its forward end and is formed at its rear end to underlie the rocking frame arm 41 so that when the key 51 is depressed the rocking frame 40 will be actuated to space the carriage.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a typewriter, the combination of a base or support, aletter-spacing paper carriage rising from the rear portion of the support, an index plate mounted on the forward portion of the support and bearing characters laid out in three or more straight non-registering rows, a flexible type band disposed crosswise of the machine in front of the paper carriage, a rigid carrier to which said flexible band is secured, said carrier being mounted for rectilinear movement across the machine in order to bring any desired character on the band into printing position, an index connected to said carrier and extending forward over the index plate and bodily movable right and left to similarly move the rigid carrier and. flexible band, and impression mechanism including a separate key and a presser foot actuated thereby to press the selected portion of the type band rearward against the impression surface.
2. In a typewriter, the combination of a base or support, a paper support and impression surface at the rear portion of the support, an index plate at the forward portion of the same, a flexible type band disposed crosswise of the machine in front of the paper carriage, a rigid carrier to which said flexible band is secured, said carrier being mounted for rectilinear movement across the machine in order to bring any desired character on the band into printing position and also tiltable backward and forward in the printing operation, an index loosely connected to said carrier so as to be independent of the latters tilting movement and extending forward over the index plate and bodily movable right and left to similarly move the rigid carrier and flexible band, and impression mechanism for tilting said carrier rearward and engaging and pressing the selected portion of the flexible band against the impression surface.
3. In a typewriter, the combination of a base or support, a paper support and impression surface at the rear portion of the support, an index plate at the forward portion of the same, a flexible type band disposed crosswise of the machine in front of the paper carriage, a rigid carrier to which.
said flexible band is secured, said carrier being mounted for rectilinear movement across the machine'in order to bring any de sired character on the band into .printing position and also tiltable backward and forward in the printing operation, an index loosely connected to said carrier so as to be independent of the latters tilting movement and extending forward over the index plate and bodily movable right and left to similarly move the rigid carrier and flexible band, a shield located between the type band and impression surface and tiltable with said carrier, and impression mechanism for tilting said carrier rearward and engaging and pressing the selected portion of the flexible band against the impression surface.
4. In a typewriter, an impression surface, a. straight flexible type band extending horizontally in front of said impression surface, said band being movable longitudinally to bring the desired character into printing position and also bodily movable toward and from the impression surface, and impression-producing mechanism for moving said band bodily toward and from the impression surface and including a presser foot for engaging the selected portion of the band to locally flex the same.

6. In a typewriter, in combination with an impression surface and a presser foot, a flexible type band movable longitudinally between the impression surface and presser foot to select the desired type, and a slidable and transversely tiltable rigid support carrying said band. Y
7 In a typewriter, an impressionsurface, a flexible type band in front of said surface, a support carrying said band mounted so as to slide lengthwise and tilt transversely, a key board, a bail loosely connected to said support at the region of its axis of tilting, an index secured to said bail and extending forward over said key board and bodily movable laterally to impart the same movemerit to said support, and means for tilting the support rearward and engaging and pressing the selected portion of the type band against the impression surface.
8. In a typewriter, an impression surface, a flexible type band in front of said surface, a support carrying said band mounted so as to slide lengthwise for type selection and ti-lt transversely in the printing operation,
a key board, and a bodily movable index extending forward, over said key board and connected to said support so as to move it lengthwise without partaking of its tilting movement. r
9. In a typewriter, an elongated longi which said carrier slides to select the desired character, and a shift key for moving said arms.
10. In a typewriter, an impression surface, an elongated type carrier longitudinally slidable in front of said impression surfaceto select the desired character, mechanism for bodily tilting said carrier forward and backward toward and from the impression surface to print and render the printed character visible, and type shift mechanism for moving said carrier edgewise up and down.
11. In a typewriter, an impression surface, a flexible type band extending across the machine parallel to the impression surface and carrying upper and lower case characters in different rows, a support carrying said band rectilinearly movable parallel to the impression surface to select the desired character and also tiltable toward and from the impression surface, and type shift mechanism for moving said support transversely of said rows of characters.

16. In a typewriter, a horizontally elongated type carrier having a cylindrical portion, supporting bearings in which said cylindrical portion slides and pivots, and a shield having a bearing by which it is mounted on said cylindrical portion of the type carrier-.'
17 In a typewriter, an elongated type carrier slidably and pivotally mounted, and a shield pivotally mounted on the pivotal portion of the type carrier and held against longitudinal movement therewith.
18. In a typewriter, in combination with an impression surface and impression-proan elongated flexible type band, a pivotal and slidable rigid support'carrying said flexible type band, and a shield interposed between the flexible type band and the impression surface and likewise pivoted to vibrate toward and from the impression surface.
19. In a typewriter, an elongated type carrier having a pivotal portion, and a bearing slidably receiving said pivotal portion and permitting limited tilting movement of the type carrier.
20. In a typewriter, the combination of a paper carriage, a type carrier elongated transversely of the machine mounted to tilt toward and from the paper carriage as well as slidable lengthwise to select any type, and a similarly tiltable shield between the type carrier and paper carriage and carrying an inking pad on the side toward the type carrier.
21. In a typewriter, the combination of an impression surface, a flexible type band movable lengthwise to bring its type severally into printing position, suitable means for pressing the selected portion of the band against the impression surface, a rectilinearly movable rigid support carrying said band, said support being also tiltable toward and from the impression surface in the printing operation, an index plate laid out in three or more straight rows of characters to correspond with the key board of a standard writing machine, and a bodily movable index independent of the tilting movement of said support and connected thereto so as to move it transversely of the machine.
22. In a typewriter, the combination of an impression surface, a flexible type band, a ri id, support carrying said band, being movable rectilinear-1y to select any character and also tiltable toward and from the impression surface, said support having recesses corresponding in arrangement to the characters on the band, and impression producing mechanism having a part which enters said recesses and cams the support to proper position if it is not accurately positioned.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a flexible type-carrying band, a locating plate bearing characters in three or more rows corresponding with the key board of a standard writing machine, and mechanism for selectively shifting the type-carrying band including an index extending across and cooperating with all the rows and movable laterally thereover and having a plurality of pointers cooperating respectively with the several rows, the series of characters from front to back and said index being in relatively oblique relation, whereby at any selecting position to which the index may be moved laterally only one pointer and one character can register with each other.
Q. In a typewriting machine, the combination of an elongated type-carrier slidable across the machine, a frame connected therewith, a fixed locating plate having rows of characters corresponding in arrangement to the characters of the keyboard of a standard writing machine, and an index arm secured to said frame and extending across and cooperating with all the rows.
25. In a typewriting machine and in com bination with a step-by-step moving paper carriage, a flexible type-carrying band, a rigid support carrying said band and movable toward and from the carriage, means connected with said support for selectively moving the same transversely of the machine, said means being independent of the movement of the support toward and from the paper carriage, and a locating plate cooperating with said means and having characters arranged in rows in accordance With the arrangement of the characters of the keyboard of a standard writing machine.
26. In a typewriter the combination with a step by step moving paper carriage of a flexible type carrying band arbitrarily slidable to bring the desired type face to the printing point, a holder for said band, said holder being movable toward and from the impression, and means to lock the band in its selected position and impress the selected type face on the paper, substantially as described.
27. In a typewriter, in combination with a longitudinally extending impression surface and a presser foot, a vertically arranged flexible type band interposed between the impression surface and presser foot, a rectilinearly movable support carrying the type band whereby the said band is 'movable lengthwise, said type band support being pivotally mounted and movable toward and from the impression surface, a key board, an index loosely connected to said support and extending over the keyboard and bodily movable laterally to impart the same movement to said support and type shift mechanism connected to said support to move said flexible band edgewise vertically.
