SEAL-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,663, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed March 7, 1879.
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. POND, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin SealPresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a hand-press for closing seals made of soft metal, such as are used for securing the doors of railway freightcars, the lids of oyster and other tubs, and for various other purposes.
The object of the invention is to produce a powerful, simple, and cheap hand-press which can be conveniently and effectively operated.
The invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a seal-press provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the press. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in line as as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the seal after it has received the impression of the dies.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the body or stock of the press, provided with a rigid handle, B, formedin one piece therewith, and C an act-uatinghandle pivoted at c in a recess or cavity of the stock A.
D is the movable die,securedto acylindrical carrier or piston, E, which slides back and forth in an axial bore of the stock A.
c is a notch or recess formed in the rear end of the piston E, for the reception of an eccentric, E, which is pivoted by a pin, 0', in the recess or cavity of the stock A.
F is an eccentric formed with the actuatinghandle 0, for closing the dies. The two eccentrics B and F are geared together by teeth formed on their contiguous faces, whereby the motion of the handle-eccentric F is transmitted to the eccentric R, which bears against the diecarrier E. The recess 6 in the rear end of the carrier E is made of such a width to fit snugly against the eccentric It on both sides, whereby the carrier E is prevented from turningin the bore or seat of the stock. The rear end of the carrier E is enlarged, so as to form an annular shoulder, g, which fits in the bore or seat of the stock, so as to slide therein, and against two movable jaws.
which bears a spiral spring, h, which presses the carrier E backward and tends to hold it in contact with the eccentric R. The spring h surrounds the carrier and abuts against an an nular plate, i, which is secured in the axial bore or seat of the stock A by a screw-thread or otherwise. The ring 45 forms also a guide for the cylindrical body of the carrier E.
L represents the stationary die, which is secured in the outer end of the axial bore of the stock in line with the movable die D by screw-threads Z, formed in the circumference of the die and in the bore of the stock A, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer face of the die L is provided with a suitable slot or hole to receive a wrench for tightening the die in its seat.
0 represents an opening, formed in the stock A for the introduction of the seal between the dies D and L. The faces of the latter are provided with interlocking parallel ribs or projecting bars 19, so arranged that the ribs of one die fit in thespaces between the ribs of the opposite die, and so that the interlocking ribs intersect the direction in which the wire is embedded in the seal, whereby the seal and wire are crimped in receiving the impression, as shown in Fig. i, which renders it impossible to strip the wire from the seal without defacing the impression.
In closing the movable handle 0 of the press the eccentric F, forming the inner end thereof and engaging with the eccentric It, presses the piston E forward, so as to compress the spring h and move the die D forward against the stationary die. The stock A in my improved press is subjected only to a tearing-strain, which acts in the direction of the piston E, and not to a breaking-strain, as in ordinary hand-presses, in which the dies are attached to the ends of My improved press can for this reason he cheaply constructed of cast or malleable iron with perfect safety and without rendering it clumsy or inconvenient for use.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a seal-press, of a die having a projection and a die having a corresponding depression, said projection and depression being arranged tointersect the direc tion in which the seal-wire is arranged in the seal placed in the press, whereby the seal and wire are crimped in forming the impression on the seal, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hand seal-press, the combination, with the stock A, provided with a rigid handle, B, an opening, 0, and astationary die, L, of a movable die, D, an actuating-handle, 0, provided with an eccentric, F, and an eccentric, R, interposed between the handle-eccentrio and the movable die, substantially as set forth.
3. In a hand sealprcss, the combination, with the tubular stock A, provided with an opening, 0, in its side, and a bore or cavity extending to the end of the stock, ofa movable die, D, arranged in said cavity on one side of the opening 0, and astationary die, L, secured in the outer end of the bore or cavity, whereby the stationary die is applied and removed through the end of the bore of the stock, substantially as set forth.
4. In a hand seal-press, the combination, with the tubular stock A, having a side opening, 0, and provided with an axial bore extending tocthe end of the stock,and constructed at its end with an internal screw-thread, of a stationary die, L, provided with an external screw-thread and'secured in the end of the bore of the stock, substantially as set forth.
5. In a seal-press, the combination, with a stock provided with an opening for the insertion of the seal and wire, of a stationary die seated in said stock, a movable die, and an actuating-handle, whereby the movable die is closed upon the stationary die, said dies be ing constructed one with a projection and the other with a corresponding depression which intersect the direction in which the wire is arranged in the seal placed in the press, substantially as set forth.
