Definitions
- the present invention relates to a transportable core drilling apparatus particularly suited for taking core samples of concrete, masonry units, bituminous surfaces and the like.
- the core samples obtained by the apparatus of the present invention are subjected to testing to determine the composition thereof.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a core drilling apparatus having its own source of power and drill wash water.
- a particular object of the invention is to provide a core drilling apparatus operable by one man.
- the present invention is an improvement over the prior art Sample Taking Machine of F. L. Howard, disclosed in Us. Patent No. 2,084,686, the apparatus of which is incorporated by reference into the present application.
- the prior art core drilling machines had many disadvantages including the necessity of a number of helpers for mounting them in position with a resulting increase in the cost of taking samples.
- the cost of taking samples is reduced by more than half as a result of the suitable construction and adaptation of the apparatus.
- a particular embodiment suggested by the present invention provides a single-axle trailer with a rotary pin spring axle and supporting wheels which is designed for a total permissible weight of 800 kg. and a highway speed of 80 km./hour.
- This trailer is provided with stop and taillights and means for illuminating the license plate.
- the trailer carries a firmly mounted chassis plate, e.g., of mm. steel, which also serves as supporting means for a barrel of about 200 liters capacity carrying washing water.
- This carrier for the water barrel also serves as a tool box and as a pivotal mounting for a positioning lever.
- a drilling mechanism such as disclosed in US. Patent No. 2,084,686 is used.
- the drilling mechanism may comprise a strong steel post with guide bars welded to it for guiding the drilling mechanism, all of these parts being mounted on a ground plate.
- the drilling mechanism is driven, for example, by a 4-cycle gasoline engine with direct flanged drive. The speed of rotation is so chosen that a drill head of 200 mm. diameter will have a perpiheral velocity of about 2 meters per second.
- the axle serves as a support to permit tilting of the entire apparatus.
- a tilting lever is manipulated in such a manner that the weight of the entire apparatus is thrown upon the ground plate and the transport wheels at the ends of the axle are lifted from the ground.
- the total weight of the attachment resting upon the lowered ground plate ensures safe support of the machine on the pavement.
- the ground plate which can also be formed of 15 mm. steel is provided with two strong pivot bearings for the tilting lever which swings through a large angle.
- the ground plate carries two strong snap connections for connecting the ground plate with the supporting plate of the chassis.
- FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the single axle apparatus with the drilling mechanism lowered from its transport position by a partial rotation of the handle-bar;
- FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus in working position with its handle-bar lowered.
- FIGURE 1 the apparatus is shown with the drilling mechanism lowered from its transport position and comprises a chassis in the form of a plate-like supporting frame carried by a rotary pin spring axle 2 on each end of which a truck wheel 3 is mounted.
- the front end of the supporting frame is provided with a coupler 4 for connecting it to the rear end of a motor vehicle for transportation.
- the truck wheel 3 and ground plate 5 rest on the surface of the roadway.
- Ground plate 5 is held in place by two pivot bearings 7 and carries an upright post 5' for supporting a core drilling mechanism 6 which is driven by a 4-cycle gasoline engine and has a direct flange connection with the drill head 15.
- a handle-bar 8 has its opposite ends pivotally connected at 9 to the supporting frame 1.
- a lever and link mechanism comprising a triangular frame 10 is connected to the pivot bearing 7 at each side of the ground plate 5, and these two triangular frames are pivotally connected at 11 to the bottom of the plate-like portion of the supporting frame 1.
- the remaining corner 12 of each triangular frame 10 is connected by links 13 with pivot bearings 14 on the parallel side arms of handle-bar 8.
- Suitable cutting heads and water connections such as those disclosed in US. Patent No. 2,084,686 are also provided.
- adjustable roller guides 16 are provided.
- the operator When the drilling machine is in its working position, the operator, who is also the driver of the motor vehicle, seats himself on one of the fenders 17 and while in that position readily controls the operation of the drilling machine.
- the present machine is capable of quick installation and can be mounted and operated by one person.
- the core which is taken from the pavement is used to ascertain the thickness and condition of the pavement.
- the front portion of the attachment with its water barrel and tool box, the rear portion of it with its core drilling mechanism are balanced with each other in the most advantageous manner.
- a transportable core drilling apparatus having core drilling means for taking pavement samples, the improvement comprising a single axle trailer chassis, said core drilling means mounted on a rigid ground plate, lever means pivotally connecting said chassis and said ground plate and a counter-balance mounted on the front of said chassis whereby said core drilling means is shifted from a transport position to the surface of the pavement by means of said lever, and the total weight of the trailer is supported by said ground plate during the core drilling operation.
- said core drilling means comprises a post mounted on said ground plate, and guide rails on said post whereby a 4-cycle internal combustion engine having a direct flanged connection to a drilling head is directed into position.
