ADAMS.
' PURSE; BAG, &c.
Patented Feb. 23, 1886.
INVENTOI? ATTORNEY UNITE STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. ADAMS, OF NEWVARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES CAMPBELL, OF SAME PLACE.
PURSE, BAG, 80C.
SPECIEICATTON forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,541, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed November 17, 1884. Serial No. 148,105.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Purses, Bags, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in an automatically closing purse or bag for which Letters Patent of the United States N 0. 288,539 were granted November 13, 1883, said improvements consistingin enlarging the purse or bag in the directionof its length and arranging the spring by which the mouth is kept stretched longitudinally near said mouth, with a lining above the spring forming a pouch thereat. The lower part of the bag is provided with openings therein,th rough which access may be had to the interior of the bag beneath the spring.
The object of the invention is to increase the capacity of the bag and, in consequence, its utility.
In the drawings herewith accompanying, Figure l is a front elevation of a bag illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 1, taken vertically therethrough.
The purse or bag illustrated in the abovedescribed drawings consists of an outer covering or bag proper, A, of any suitable material, with a spring, B, approximately U- shaped, arranged within the same near the mouth, having its ends secured to or in the ends of the flexible mouth by clips or clamps a. A lining, a, is provided within the bag above the spring, forming a pouch thereat, the interior of which is reached through the mouth. The lower part of the bag extends below the spring, forming a large receptacle, D, to which access is had through one or more openings, (2, in the sides. If desirable, a second lining may be inserted below the spring to prevent articles placed in the large recep' tacle from catching thereon.
As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the edge of (No model.)
mouth of the bag and the spring and draws the sides of said mouth together.
The bag is provided with a handle, f, of
any suitable design, which is attached to the bag, as shown, or in any well -known manner.
To increase the capacity of the bag, a gusset, 9, is inserted between the sides, substantially as indicated in Fig. 3; but as this may be accomplished in many other ways I do not wish to limit myself to the peculiar method shown.
In this bag, as well as in that referred to by number, the mouth is opened by pressing the ends of the spring together, by which the sides are spread apart. The spring by its own power closes the mouth when relieved of the pressure.
Having thus illustrated and describedmy invention, what I wish to claim is- 1. A purse or bag having a flexible mouth, a spring arranged within said purse or bag near the mouth, with a lining above said spring, forming a pouch at the month, sub stantially as set forth, and having the body of said bag extending below said spring, with one or more openings in the side or sides, for the purpose set forth.
2. A purse or bag having a flexible mouth, a spring arranged within said purse or bag near the mouth, the ends of which are secured to the ends of the month by clips that bind the ends of said mouth and spring together, substantially as set forth, a lining above said spring forming a pouch at the mouth, and having the body of said bag extending below said spring, with one or more openings in the side or sides, and provided with ahandle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of 100 November, 1884.
GEORGE B. ADAMS.
Witnesses:
FREDK. F. CAMPBELL, ARTHUR W. J onnson.
