Description

PATENTED NOW-5, 1861.
0. w. KELLOGG. ROAD SO'RAPER.
' proved Road-Qcraper; and I dohereby declare will proceed to describe it.
'the act of scraping.
UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
0. WV. KELLOGG, OF RIPON, VVISOONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,650, dated November 5, 1861.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, O. W. KELLOGG, of Ripon, in thecounty of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Imthat the following is afull, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in 'which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention; Fig. 2, aside sectional view of 'the'sanie, taken in the line :13 00, Fig. 1.
. Similar letters of reference indicate correponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a road-scraperof simple constructiomwhich may 1 be readily tilted in order to discharge its load, and'also readily righted or set for filling after the load is discharged, and one in which the necessary manipulation will, be attended with but. little labor, while the device will be under the complete control of ,the operator.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I
A represents a board, which forms the back of the scraper, and has a draftpole B attached to its front side and two handles 0 0 attached to its back part. The board A may be of any suitable or desired length, and there is a side piece D at each end ofit, said side pieces forming the sides of the body of the machine'when the latter is at work or in The lower ends of the side pieces D D fo'rmjacute angles with their ont sides, and to-thelower ends of the side :ces a bottom board E is secured, the front part of which is shod with metal, as shown at a. The front, edge of the bottom board may be straight, shown in Fig. 1, orit may be rounded, a indicated by the dotted lines. The side pieces D D ext-end up as high as the, top of the back board A, their front edges being shod ,with-inetal, as shown at b, and the back edge of board E is connected by hinges or 'joints a' to the lower edge of the board.
'ing position.
"has an inclined position, the back edges of the side pieces D D bearingagainst the back board A.'. The dirt is scraped up by the board Bathe shod portion a. forming asort of share.
When a s-ufiicient quantity of dirt has been scrapedup into the body of the device, the attendant who has hold of the handles 0 C slightly elevates the'back partofthe machine and the sharea of the bottom board E catches against the ground. and said board is thrown backand thefro'nt edges of theside pieces D D brought in contact with the ground, as shown in red, Fig. 2.. The' load is thus very readily dumped or discharged, and in order to have the parts adjusted in proper position the driver simply backstheteam so that the share awillcatch against the ground and the'parts are thrown back to their work- The manipulation required'to operate the machine, it willbe seen, is, but little and may be performed with facility and with but trif-.
ling labor, while theconstr'nction is extremely simple and durable, there being no parts liable to get out of repair nor-become deranged by use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The bottom board E, provided with a share orshod port-iona and having side piecesD 1) attached, in connection with the back.
board A,having the draft-pole B and handles 0 0 attached to it and connected to'the back edge of the bottom board E by hinges or joints a, all being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
