Description

J. MORRISON.
I MowPlow. No. 25.846. Patented Oct 18. 18-59 a I 425 IT?! a N.PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, u
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MORRISON, OF DE WITT, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLE-PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MonRIsoN, of De Witt, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Drain or Mole Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the mole of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a novel means employed for varying the position of the line of draft relatively with the beam and mole, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby the implement may be readily guided or moved by the draft alone to give it the desired direction.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the beam of the implement, to the back part of which a pendant or standard, 13, is attached, having a cutting-edge in front and a mole, O, at its lower end, which mole will be hereinafter fully described.
The front end of the beam A is fitted between uprights a, that are attached to a block, D, the front part of which is rounded upward, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The front end of the beam A is allowed to rise and fall freely between the uprights a, and it is retained at any desired height within the scope of its movement by a screw-rod, E, which passes vertically through it, a proper nut being fitted in the beam for the screw-rod to pass through. The upper part of the screw-rod passes through a plate, b, and is provided with a crank, c, for the purpose of turning it and adjusting the front end of the beam higher or lower, in order to regulate the depth of the mole C.
On the upper surface of the block 1) a horizontal bar, F, is placed and secured at any desired point by a pin, d. At each end of the bar F there is an eye, 6, through which a draftchain, G, passes, said chain passing along at each side of the beam A, and having its ends attached to loopsH H, which are fitted on the ends of a traverse-bar, I, that is secured in the back part of the beam.
Through the back part of each loop H a screw rod, J, passes, a nut being formed on the back part of each loop, through which the screwrods pass. The screw-rods, have their bearin gs in a traverse-bar, K,which is fitted in the beam Ajust in front of the pendant or standard B.
The team or draft power is attached to the front of the chain G, and it will be seen, by referring to Fig. 2, that the attendant by turning either rod J niay draw back or loosen either side of the chain, and thereby change the position of the drat't-ringfeither to the right or left, and consequently guide the plow or give it the proper direction by the action of the draft.
The mole O is of wedge form, its sides being parallel and its top and bottom surfaces inclined, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The standard B is attached to the mole at about the center of its length. The front edge of the mole is slightly rounded, and both its upper and under surface, at its back part,'has a swell or rounded protuberance, g, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
I do not claim regulating the depth of the mole G by raising and lowering the part of the beam A by means of the screwrod E, for this has been previously done; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The draft-chain Gr, bar F, loops H H, and the adjusting screw-rods J J, or their equivalents, combined, arranged, and applied to the plow substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN MORRISON.
