I. KARP.
CORSET. No. 336,413. Patented Feb. 16, 1886 WITNESSES.-
N. FEI'ERS. Halo-Lithographer. Washington. n.c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA KARP, OF NFAV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HERSELF, AND MAX RUBIN, OF
- BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CORSET.
EL-ICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 336,413, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed November 18, 1885. Serial No. 183,190. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. IDA KARP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oorsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved corset, in which the breast swells are capable of being adjusted to larger or smaller size; and the invention consists of a corset the breast- IO swells of which are provided with one or more springs, each spring consisting of two portions adapted to slide one on the other, so as to thereby enlarge or contract the swells.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front view of my improved corset, with part broken off. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same ona larger scale; and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections of different forms of the connectingloops of the springs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents a corset of any approved construction, and B B are the breastswells of the same. The breast-swells B are provided with one or more transverse springs, which consist of two portions, a a, that are riveted, soldered, or otherwise attached at one end to the stays C O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or to the fabric of the corset. The opposite ends of the springs are provided with loops 1) b, which may be constructed in any suitable manner, although I prefer to use the constructions shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In Fig. 3 the loop is formed integral with the spring by making the spring with T-shaped ends and bending the ends over, while in Fig. 4 the loop is made separately and soldered or riveted to the spring.
When it is desired to increase the size of the o breast-swell, the springs or a are extended by sliding in the loops 1) b, so that the latter ap proach each other, while for reducing the size of the swell the springs are contracted by sliding the springs in the loops away from each 5 other. The breast-swells will remain in the position given by the springs, as the strength of the springs is sufficicnt to counteract any pressure exerted on the same.
The advantages of my improved corset are that the breast-swells can be easily adjusted to any size and retained in the desired shape, so that a better shape is imparted to the bust.
Having thus described my in vention, [claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 5 1. A corset the breast-swells of which are provided with one or more transverse extensible springs, substantially as set forth.
2. In a corset, the combination, with the breast-swells and stays adjoining said breast- 6o swells, of one or more transverse extensible springs made of two sections attached to said stays and guided along each other by loops at the overlapping ends, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IDA KAR-P.
