UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
GEORGE WV. ROBBURTS, OF ELMO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN E. POLK, OF SAME PLACE.
TRACK-RAISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,161, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed August-1, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBBURTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmo, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in TraclcRaisers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in railroad-track raisers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is perspective view of a track-raiser embodying iny invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the track-raiser in oneposition in solid lines and in another position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a modification, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification of my invention adapted for use asa bridge-raiser.
A represents a base, which is of a length adapted to fit transversely between the rails of a railway-track, and from near the ends of which project the vertical standards B, which are reduced at their upper ends, as at O. A vertical standard, D, projects from the center of the base A, and the upper end of this standard is also reduced, as at E.
F represents a transverse beam, which is provided with three mortises, through which extend the reduced ends of the standards, the beam F being thereby enabled to be moved vertically on the standards, as will be very readily understood. To the outer ends of the beam F, on its under side, are bolted or otherwise secured lugs D, and to the outer ends of the base A, on its upper side, are secured similar lugs, H.
I represents toggle-jointed levers, which are fulcrumed to and are connected at their joints by rods K, the inner ends of which are fulcrumed to hand-levers L on opposite sides diametrically of the fulcrum-point M of said levers, where the levers are fulcrumed to the central standard, D, on opposite sides thereof. The hand-levers are adapted to move through half acircle in opposite directions to each other, and cause the toggle-levers to assume Serial No. 173,577. (No lllO ltl.)
the positions shown in Fig. 2, and thereby raise and lower the beam F. To the ends of the beam F, on opposite sides thereof, are pivoted two pairs of hooks, O, which depend therefrom and are adapted to engage with the under sides of the track or rail.
The operation of my invention will readily be understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with and by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of my invention, in which each lever is connected by a rod, K, with only one of the togglejointed levers. By this arrangement it will be seen that the toggle-levers can be worked independently of each other, one at a time or both simultaneously, so as to raise only one end of the beam F when it is desired to raise only one side of the track, or both ends of the beam at once when it is desired to raise both sides of the track. I also contemplate dispensing altogether with the connectingrods K and the standards D, and securing the lower ends of the levers firmly to the toggle-levers just below the joints thereof, which would enable either or both ends of the beam F to be raised or lower.
In Fig. 5 I show a modified form of my invention, which is adapted for use as a bridgeraiser or for raising other extremely heavy weights, wherein I lengthen the projecting end of the standard D and provide it at its upper end with a windlass or winch, P, to one end of which is fixed a ratchet-wheel, R.
S represents a hand-lever, which is fulcrumed to the standard D, and is provided with a spring-actuated or gravity pawl, T, which engages with the ratchet-teeth of the ratchetwheel, and thereby as the hand-lever is oscillated imparts a rotary motion to the winch.
Ropes V have their ends connected to the winch and to the outer ends of the levers L, and thereby the rotation of the winch winds the rope thereupon and raises the outer ends of the lovers L, and thereby raises the weight suspended by the books. A gravity or springactuated pawl, IV, also engages with the ratchet-wheel, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination of the base and the standards with the beam F, adjustable on the ends of the standards, the toggle-jointed levers connecting the beam F with the base A, the hooks O, suspended from the beam F, and the 5 levers for moving the toggle-leve1's,and thereby raising and lowering the beam F, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the base A, having the standards B D, the beam F, working on 10 the upper ends of said standards, the togglelevers connecting the beam F with the base A, the hooks suspended from the beam F, thelevers L, (one or more,) fulcrumed to the standard D, and the rods K, connecting the joints of .r 5 the toggle-levers with the levers L on oppo- F, and the handles or levers for moving the toggle-jointed levers, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
G. W. ROBBURTS.
