UNITED STATES PATENT QEETCE,
ANDREW J. BOOK, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMEIA.
COAL-HOD.
EBTPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,776, dated February 9, 1886.
Application filed October 21, 1885. Serial No. 180,539.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. RooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Hods; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in coal-hods; and the object is to provideahod of the usual form, with an ash-sitter top, so that after the coal in the hod has been emptied on the fire the ashes may be taken up and carried to a convenient place, the hod inverted, so that the sifter-top will become the bottom, and the ashes separated from the cinders or unburned coal; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully'described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The figure in the drawing is a perspective view of my improved coal-hod provided with a Sifter-top.
A is the coal-hod. The rear portion of the top is provided with a screen, B, permanently secured thereto. 0 isa similar screen, hinged (No model.)
to the rigid screen B by suitable hinges, a a. The frame D of the screen 0 is of the same form as the top of the hod which it covers, exceptthat it extends outward over the mouth a to form a handle, 0.
When the device is used as a sifter, the hinged screen 0 is closed and the bed inverted, and by grasping the handles 0 and d the hod may be agitated to separatethe ashes from the cinders, as above set forth. By grasping the handle 0 and raising the hinged frame D until they assume a vertical position they serve as a bail or handle, by means of which the hod may be lifted and carried from place to place, thus dispensing with the old form of bail or handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A coal-hod provided with a fixed and a hinged screen, the frame of the latter forming a handle for the hod proper, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hod A, having handle (I, of the rigid screen B and hinged screen 0, having frame D, provided with handle c, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
