No. 464,666 6 Claims. (Cl. 70-146) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A heavy duty door lock assembly with inner and outer knobs secured on inner and outer cam tubes, respectively, with the cam tubes journalled in the hubs of a housing assembly and each cam tube provided with a rollback actuating a retractor within the housing. The retractor is biased to a position towards a latch bolt assembly for a door containing the lock assembly and actuates the latch bolt upon rotation of either knob. A push button in the linner knob actuates a locking bar having a locking clip thereon which, when the push button is depressed, has one end abutting a locking lever in a cylinder cam within the outer cam tube to `move the locking lever to a position preventing rotation of the outer knob and cam tube, and the other end of the clip is pivoted to abut the retractor. Rotation of the inner cam tube and knob, or actuation by a cylinder lock in the outer knob causing rotation of the cylinder cam resulting in retraction of the retractor to release the locking clip and locking bar.
Thepresent invention relates to a novel builders lock lset and more particularly to a novel heavy duty door lock assembly provided with novel latching and locking means therefor.
Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel lock assembly having a latch bolt and ybolt retractor, an outer knob and cam tube assembly, an
'means actuated from the inner knob for preventing the release of the latch bolt by turning of the outer knob, but permitting retraction of the latch bolt by use of a key-operated means in the outer knob.
Another object of the present invention is the provision in a lock set of novel operating mechanism for controlling actuation of a latch bolt and including novel locking means actuated from the interior of the closed door for locking the latch bolt against retraction by rotating the l' outer knob. In this novel embodiment, an outer knob and.
its integral sleeve are aiiixed to an outer cam tube, an
inner knob and its integral sleeve are affixed to an inner cam tube, lthe `outer cam tube having a cylinder cam and L a locking lever and the inner cam tube and the inner knob lhaving a locking bar actuated by a button mounted on one end in the inner knob, the bar at its other end engaging the locking lever for locking the outer cam tube 'and its knob against rotation, and means in the outer knob for rotating the cylinder cam causing its cam to retract the latch bolt and release the door for opening.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a novel means and mechanism for retracting the latch bolt from the exterior by a key-operated cylinder lock actuating a cylinder cam which releases the latch bolt when locked from the inner knob. In this novel em- ICC bodiment, the latch bolt is locked by means of a springbiased locking bar operated from the inner knob, the locking bar actuating a locking member or lever for locking the outer knob against release by turning, but providing key-operated means in the outer knob for releasing the latch bolt by insertion of the proper key and turning of the cylinder of the lock.
The present invention further comprehends a novel builders lock assembly having an outer knob and an integral sleeve, an inner knob and integral sleeve, a housing assembly comprising complementary sections housing a bolt retractor, and camming means associated with each knob for retracting the bolt when unlocked by turning either knob and its cam or rollback, and locking means actuated from the inner knob for locking the outer knob and its associated parts against rotation.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a novel latch and dead bolt assembly for a builders lock construction.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring to the disclosure in the drawings, the present lock assembly comprises an outer knob having an integral inwardly projecting split sleeve 11 receiving therein and encompassing the outer end of a split cam tube 12 and upon the inner end of the sleeve 11 is the outer end of the encompassing outer hub or bearing 13 of a housing assembly 14 with the hub telescoping the split cam tube 12. The sleeve 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11a. Within the cam tube 12 -is a cylinder cam 15 with the cam tube land cylinder cam each having a radially oifset arcuate projection on its inner end forming a cam or rollback 16 on the cam tube 12 and a cam or rollback 17 on the cylinder cam 1S for retracting a latch bolt, these cams being circumferentially aligned and rotatable together and relative to each other, the cam tube 12 being afxed to and rotatable with the outer knob 10 and its sleeve 11 and the cylinder cam v15 connected to and turning with the proper key 18 of a cylinder of a cylinder lock assembly 19 mounted within the outer knob 10, its slotted sleeve 11 and the telescoped cam tube 12. The outer end of the cam tube 12 projecting into the slotted sleeve 11 0f the outer knob 10 is provided with diametrically disposed slots 21 either conformably receiving and retaining a radially projecting portion of the key lock assembly 19.
The housing assembly 14 includes the hub 13 providing an outer housing bearing having external threaded p0rtions 22 and 23 with a sealing or O ring 24 therebetween, an outer end plate and split housing section 2S, an inner end plate and split housing section 26, and an inner housing bearing or hub 27 having threaded portions 28 and 29 with a sealing ring 24 therebetween, the housing sections 25 and 26 combining to form a substantially U-shaped housing 31.
An inner knob '32 and in integral inwardly projecting split sleeve 33 similar to the outer knob 10 and its sleeve 11, receives an end of an inner cam tube 34 similar to the -cam tube 12 except that the cam or rollback `35 on the tube 34 is of the combined arc or extent (approximately of the adjoining lcams or rollbacks 16 and 17 on the outer cam tube 12 and the cylinder cam 15. Encompassing the end of the sleeve 33 and the cam tube 34 is the inner housing section 26 with the inner housing bearing 27. Each generally circular housing section 25 and 26 is cut away at 36 for suitable clearance to permit detachably mounting an assembled latch bolt assembly 37 in a bore in the edge of a door, as hereinafter explained. When the inner and outer housing sections 25 and 26 of the housing 31 are assembled, these parts are suitably aligned by aligning pins bridging aligned openings 38 in the housing sections and joined together by screws inserted from the side of the inner knob 32 through openings 39 in the inner housing section 26 with the openings in the outer housing section 25 being threaded.
Conformably received in the contines of the U-shaped opening 42 formed by the spaced parallel internal sides of the housing sections 25 and 26 of the substantially U-shaped housing 31 is a retractor 43 of substantially rectangular shape having spaced sides 44 and 44a with inturned projections 45 and 45a at their free ends. The opposite sides 46 and 46a provide connecting portions having a transverse slot 47 which is open at its opposite end s i between the sides 46 and 46a, and each of these last mentioned sides having curved inturned shoulders 48 and 48a providing camming surfaces against which the outer edge of the arcuate cams or rollbacks 16 and 17 of the outer cam tube 12 and the cylinder cam 15 and the edges of the rollback 35 on the inner cam tube 34 abut for retracting the retractor 43 and withdrawing the latch bolt. Within the rounded closed end of the opening 42 in the housing 31 is a bridging substantially U-shaped spring retainer 49 against which the outer end of a pair of `adjacent coil springs 51 abut for spring-biasing the retractor 43 toward the open end of the housing 31. The other end of each spring 51 seats within an opening 52 in the rear of the connecting portions 53 of the retractor 43 and retaining these springs under compression.
In the cylinder cam 15 is rotatably mounted a locking member or lever 54 and an expansion spring 55, the member 54 having a laterally extending arm 56 at its inner end projecting outside of the cylinder cam 15 and adapted to be received in an open-ended slot 57 provided in the inner circumference of the adjacent outer end plate of .the housing section 25 and extending into the outer bearing 13 of the housing assembly 31 and in an open-ended slot 58 in the inner end of the cam tube 12 adapted to be aligned with the slot 57.. The arm 56 when entering the aligned slots 57 and 58, locks the cam tube 12 in the xed or stationary housing section 25 and its .bearing 13 whereby to lock and prevent rotation of the outer knob.
The cylinder cam 15 is circumferentially slotted at 59 and this slot is provided with a `longitudinal notch 61 open at its outer end for locking assembly in the encompassing cam tube 12, the latter having a circumferential detent intermediate its ends adapted to be received in the notch 61 when aligned therewith and upon `longitudinal movement of the cylinder cam 15, this indentation 62 moves through the notch, enters the circumferential kslot 59 and upon relative rotation therebetween, retains the cylinder cam 15 assembled in the cam tube 12.
The locking member or lever 54 is assembled in the encompassing lcylinder cam 15, the member 54 having a bushing 60 provided with a collar 63 at its outer end which is notched at 64 and the cylinder cam 15 having a detent 65 in its circumference which, when aligned with the slot in the collar 63, permit the bushing 60 of the locking member to be inserted and upon rotation retained in the cylinder cam 15. The spring 55 seats at one end against the collar 63 and at .its other end seats against a constriction having diametrically opposed inturned lugs 66 (FIGS. 29 and 31-34) on the outer end of the cam cylinder 15, and spring-biases the locking member 54 inwardly beyond a circumferential inwardly opening vslot 67 in the inner edge of the cam cylinder. This end slot 67 is of a greater arc orv extent than the width of the laterally projecting arm V56 'whereby the locking member 54 is permitted limited rotation within and relative to the cylinder cam -15,'thelatter being rotated by turning of the cylinder .ofthe lock assembly 19 with the locking member 54 depressed an elongated, flat locking bar 68 to prevent the outer lcam tube 12 and its affixed outer knob 10 from rotating. ,The lugs 66 on the outer end of the cylinder cam 15 are engaged by the projected end 70 of the lock cylinder 19.
The vlocking bar 68 which projects through the inner ,cam tube 34 has a broadened end 69 projecting into a lconformingslot 71 in the adjacent open end 72 of the locking member 54. Pivotally mounted on the locking bar A6,8 is a locking clip 73 adjacent a lateral projection 74 dis,-
posed within the housing 31 and projecting through the elongated slot 47 in the open interior of the retractor 44.
To the outer end. 75 of this locking barwithin the outer v end of the cam tube'29 is affixed a push button 76 project-ing througha central vopening 77 in the inner knob 32. u l i About the outer: end of each housing bearing or hub 13` and 27 and the inner end of each sleeve 11 and 33 of the outer andinner knobs and 32 is mounted a trim ring 78 and threaded onto the threaded portion of each bearing is the threaded hub or collar 79of an escutcheon or'rose 81 bearing againstthe opposite sides of a door land an escutcheon-ring 82. A knob insert 83 provides a --closure for the open inner end ,of each knob 10 and 32.
Each knob 10 and 32 is retained by means of an arcuate snap spring 84 spring-biasing asnapspring button 85 to be projected through transverse slots 86 in the cam tubes 12 and 34 and aligned slots 87. in the outer and inner A.sleeves 11 and-33 of the outer and inner knobs 10 and .32, respectively. The .inner trim ring ,78 is provided with The locking bar 68 `projects through theV slot'47 in the '-opposite endsof the Aretractor `43 with its lateral project'ionr74-projecting through and movable in this slot extending through the retractor, and its locking c'lip 73 is of 'U-sh'ape'vr to -straddle the locking bar 68 and is pivotally mounted thereon by atransverse pin at 89. When moved to locking position bydepressing the push button 76 the inner end 91 of the clip is adapted to abut the adjacent end 72 of the locking member or lever 54 and when so engaged the clip is tilted with its opposite end 92 abutting the adjacent slotted end wall 46 or 46B of the retractor `43 to prevent release and retraction of the locking bar 68 except upon turning of the inner knob 32 and its cam tube 34, or by turning of the proper key to rotate the cylinder cam 15. Rotating the arcuate cams or rollbacks 16, 17 and 35 on the outer cam tube 12, on the cylinder cam and on the inner cam tube 34, respectively with their edges in continuous contacting engagement with the curved camming shoulders 48 and 48a on the retractor 43, retracts the latter which in turn retracts the latch bolt as hereafter pointed ont. Retraction of the retractor 43 when the push button 76 is depressed aligns the slot 47 in the retractor with the end 92 of the locking clip 73 to allow the locking clip and its associated locking bar 68 to return to its unlocked position under the impetus of the spring 55 urging the locking lever 54 toward the housing 31.
The latch bolt assembly 37 comprises a spring-'biased latch bolt 93 having a projecting leg 94 and a dead bolt 95 mounted within a housing 96. The flat side of the latch bolt 93 is provided with a longitudinally extending arcuate slot 97 receiving the longitudinally movable dead bolt 95; the latter being of rounded contour having a reduced inner end 98 encompassed by a coil spring 99 springbiasing the dead bolt to its extended position alongside the latch bolt 93.
The inwardly projecting leg 94 (FIG. 42) of the latch bolt 93 has a wide base portion 100 anchored or staked to the bolt and a relatively narrow extension 101 extending longitudinally through the housing 96 and having at its inner end a substantially T-shaped head or projection 102 for detachable engagement with the projections 45 and 45a on the retractor 43 in the housing 31. Slidably mounted on the base portion and extension 101 of the leg of the bolt is a follower 103 (FIG. 1) having at one end a bifurcated, laterally projecting ange 104 with the bifurcations received in an annular slot 105 (FIG. 45) in the dead bolt 95, and at the other end the follower 103 is provided with downwardly and outwardly extending projections 106 which 'span and guide the follower 103 and dead bolt 95 on the Vnarrow extension 101 of the leg 94 of the latch bolt 93. In its spring-biased outward position, the flange 104 abuts the inner end of the latch bolt 93 with projections 106 abutting the shoulders 107, to thereby limit outward movement of the dead bolt 93.
In the housing 96 alongside the projecting leg of the latch bolt 93 is a retractor 108 (FIGS. 43 and 44) having va rectangular slotted portion 109 at one end and a T- shaped head 110 similar to the head 102 von the outer end ofthe leg 94 of the latch bolt, these T-shaped heads 102 and 110 being in abutting relation and engaged by the inturned projections 45 and 45EL of the retractor 4 3 to retract the latch bolt. The retractor 108 is provided with a laterally projecting arcuate flange 111 and a longitudinally spaced laterally projecting flange 112 with each flange provided with an opening 113 arranged in alignment and received on a pin 114 of a pair of spaced outwardly projecting longitudinally extending pins 114 and 114a` projecting inwardly into the housing from its bottom orend wall 115. On the other pin 114a is mounted the basegange 116 of l'a locking pawl 117 (FIGS. l, 46 and 47) having spaced legs or bifurcations 118 with the offset ends 119 of these legs aligned with and adapted to engage the opposite edges 121 of the retractor 108, these edges being inclined whereby to cam these legs 118 of the locking pawl 117 out of locking engagement with the retractor 108.
`projects through a` slot in the base 11,5, of the housing in parallel "and abutting"'r'elation with a similarly-shaped head or projection 102 at the end of the leg 94 of the latch bolt 93. On the other pin 114a is mounted the base flange 116 of the locking pawl 117 with the latter adapted to have limited pivotal movement with the ends 119 of its legs 118 movable into and out of locking engagement with the opposite edges 121 of the retractor 108. The inner end 98 of the dead bolt 95 is provided with a central opening (see FIG. 45) for receiving and moving longitudinally on the pin 114a with the dead bolt being thus spring-biased to its outer projected position by the coil spring 99.
When the door is closed, the dead bolt 95 and the follower 103 are depressed due to the dead bolts contacting engagement with a strike plate on the adjacent door jamb. In this depressed position, the latch bolt 9'3 is held against retraction by pressure applied directly to the bolt through the ends 119 of the pawl 117 engaging the edges 121 of the retractor 108. The projections 106 of the retracted follower 103 engage the ends 119 of arms 118 to prevent tilting of the locking pawl 117 from its locking position whereby an intruder cannot force the latch bolt inwardly to open the door by means of a suitable instrument pressed against the outer inclined surface of the latch bolt.
The latch bolt assembly 37 is readily mounted in the open end 42 of the housing 31 by engaging the T-shaped heads 102 and 110 of the leg 94 of the latch bolt and the retractor 108, respectively, behind the projections 45 and 45a on the retractor 43 in the open end 42 of the housing 31, and includes a backing plate 122 aixed to the housing 96 and a face plate 123 having screw holes aligned with the screw holes of the backing plate for attaching the face plate, ybacking plate and housing to the edge of a door.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. A door lock construction comprising an outer and an inner knob, each provided with an integral slotted sleeve, a housing having complementary housing sections each with `a bearing, a tube mounted in and affixed to each sleeve of a knob and extending through a bearing so that each sleeve and tube is rotatable in the bearing of the housing section with the adjacent end of each 4tube projected yinto the interior of the housing and thereat provided with an arcuate cam surface, a spring-loaded retractor in the housing having ycamming surfaces en-` gaged by the arcuate cam surfaces of said tubes, a latch bolt connected to and retracted by the camming action .of said .retractor upon turning one of the knobs, Yand locking mechanism projecting through the inner knob, its tube and into the housing for locking the outer knob and its tube against rotation, said locking mechanism including an elongated locking bar projecting kthrough the inner knob and its sleeve, its tube and into the housing, a locking clip pivotally mounted on the locking bar within the housing, said locking bar projecting through and longitudinally movable in said retractor With said locking c-lip cooperating with said retractor to retain said bar in its inwardly depressed locking position until released by turning the inner knob to retract the retractor and release the locking clip.
2. A door lock construction as set forth in claim 1, ,in which said outer tube is provided at its inner end with a cylinder cam rotatably mounted in said outer tube and provided with a camming surface for engaging and retracting the retractor and 'the latch bolt without rotating the outer knob and the outer cam tube.
3. A door lock construction as set forth in claim 2, including a key-operated lock in the outer knob and outer tube for engaging and rotating said cylinder cam to actuate the retractor to retract the latch bolt.
4. A door lock construction comprising an outer and an inner knob each provided with an integral slotted sleeve, ka housing having complementary housing sections each with a bearing, a tube mounted in and aixed to each sleeve of one vof the knobs vand extending through a bearing whereby each sleeve and its tube are rotatable in the bearing of a housing section with the adjacent end of each tube projected into the interior of the housing and thereat provided with an arcuate cam surface, a spring-loaded retractor in the housing having camming surfaces engaged by the arcuate cam surfaces of said tubes, a latch bolt connected to and retracted by the camming action of said retractor upon turning one of the knobs, locking mechanism for locking the outer knob and its tube against rotation including a locking bar projecting through the inner knob and its sleeve, its cam tube and into the housing, a locking clip pivotally mounted on said locking bar Within the housing, said locking bar projecting through and longitudinally movable in said retractor -With said locking clip retaining said bar in vits inwardly depressed locking position until released by turning the inner knob, said outer cam tube being provided at its inner end with a cylinder cam rotatably mounted ih said outer tube and provided with a camming vsurface for engaging and retracting the retractor and the latch bolt Without rotating the outer rknob and the 'outer cam tube, and said cylinder cam has mounted therein a spring-v loaded locking lever provided with a locking projection, said locking lever engaged by and movable with the inner end of the locking bar and depressed bythe latter whereby to move the locking projection into a slot inthe `housing for locking the outer cam and the outer knob against rotation.
5. A door lock construction as set forth in claim 4, in which said locking lever is rotatably and vlongitudinally movable in said cylinder cam, said outer knob and outer cam tube having a key-operated lock for engaging and rotating said cylinder cam and thereby actuating the retractorto retract the latch bolt. v
6. A door lock construction as set forth in claim 4, in which the spring-loaded locking lever and the locking bar are automatically released upon turning the inner "knob or the cylinder cam.

1. A DOOR LOCK CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING AN OUTER AND AN INNER KNOB, EACH PROVIDED WITH AN INTEGRAL SLOTTED SLEEVE, A HOUSING HAVING COMPLEMENTARY HOUSING SECTIONS EACH WITH A BEARING A TUBE MOUNTED IN AND AFFIXED TO EACH SLEEVE OF A KNOB AND EXTENDING THROUGH A BEARING SO THAT EACH SLEEVE AND TUBE IS ROTATABLE IN THE BEARING OF THE HOUSING SECTION WITH THE ADJACENT END OF EACH TUBE PROJECTED INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE HOUSING AND THEREAT PROVIDED WITH AN ARCUATE CAM SURFACE, A SPRING-LOADED RETRACTOR IN THE HOUSING HAVING CAMMING SURFACES ENGAGED BY THE ARCUATE CAM SURFACES OF SAID TUBES, A LATCH BOLT CONNECTED TO AND RETRACTED BY THE CAMMING ACTION OF SAID RETRACTOR UPON TURNING ONE OF THE KNOBS, AND LOCKING MECHANISM PROJECTING THROUGH THE INNER KNOB, ITS TUBE AND INTO THE HOUSING FOR LOCKING THE OUTER KNOB AND ITS TUBE AGAINST ROTATION, SAID LOCKING MECHANISM INCLUDING AN ELONGATED LOCKING BAR PROJECTING THROUGH IN INNER KNOB AND ITS SLEEVE, ITS TUBE AND INTO THE HOUSING, A LOCKING CLIP PIVOTALLY MOUNTED ON THE LOCKING BAR WITHIN THE HOUSING, SAID LOCKING BAR PROJECTING THROUGH AND LONGITUDINAL MOVABLE IN SAID RETRACTOR WITH SAID LOCKING CLIP COOPERATING WITH SAID RETRACTOR TO RETAIN SAID BAR IN ITS INWARDLY DEPRESSED LOCKING POSITION UNTIL RELEASED BY TURNING THE INNER KNOB TO RETRACT THE RETRACTOR AND RELEASE THE LOCKING CLIP.
