HENRY M. GUILD, OF WOODBURY, NEW JERSEY.
PRESERVE-JAR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,444, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed June 26, 1885 .T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. GUILD, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Voodbury, in the county of Gloucester, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preserve-Jar Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a preserve-jar fastening embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents avertical section thereof in line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a preserve-jar fastening formed of a clamp which is adapted to engage with spiral lugs or threads on the neck of the jar, and connected centrally to a button, whose under side has a packing of rubber or other soft material, which is compressed against the lid of the jar and tightly closes a vent therein. Provision is made for firmly holding the packing in the button and permitting the clamp and button to roll on each other, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a fruit or preserve jar, and B the lid thereof, the latter having a vent, G, for admission of air into the jar when the same is to be opened.
D represents a clamp, formed of a strip of steel or other suitable metal or material, having its ends bent downwardly, the terminations thereof being turned inwardly, forming lips E, which are adapted to engage with spiral lugs or threads F on the body of the jar. On the under side of the clamp, at the center thereof, is a button, G, of metal or other suitable material, which is journaled or pivoted to the clamp by means of a stud or pin, H, which is properly connected with the clamp and button, and permits the clamp to rotate on the button. The button is of the form of a disk, perforated to admit the pin H, and recessed on its under side to receive a packing, J, of soft rubber or other suitable elastic or flexible material, the disk having Serial No. 169,815. (No model.)
its upper side or face convex, so that should there be any irregularity in the lid, gasket, or shoulder of the jar, or the clamp, button, pin, or packing of the fastening, the clamp and button may roll on each other, avoiding breakage or injury to the parts, especially chipping of the center of the lid when made of glass. The lower edge of the button is turned inwardly, forming a rim or shoulder, K, which underhangs the periphery of the packing and serves to hold the packing in position. The top of the lid has a recess, L, to receive the button G, and the wall around the vent O is slightly raised, so that the packing of the button rests thereon, thus avoiding direct contact of the body of the button with the lid and consequent injury to the latter when pressure is applied to the button by the action of the clamp. A gasket, M, is employed, and when the lid and the clamp with its connected button are applied in position the clamp is rotated, and as it engages with the spiral lugs or threads of the jar, and is drawn downwardly, it forces the lid firmly on its seat, tightly closing thejar and surely retaining the lid in position. The button is also forced by the clamp against the lid and its packing compressed on the same around the wall of the vent, so that the vent is reliably closed. The button does not rotate with the clamp, but remains fixed on the lid, thus avoiding any liability to injure the lid, es pecially around the wall of the vent.
In order to open the jar, the clamp is properly rotated or unscrewed, the button being raised therewith, thereby uncovering the vent O and permitting air to enter thejar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A jar having spiral lugs and a lid having a vent and a recess in its upper face, in combination with a button, pin, and clamp, said button resting in said recess, and being pivoted to the clamp by the said pin, substantially as described.
2. The jar A, having spiral lugs, in combination with the lid B, having vent C and recess L, button G, having convex upper face,
clamp D, having lips E, and pin H, pivoted to der face, packing J and gasket M, and pin said disk, substantially as and for the purpose H, pivoted to said button, substantially as de-' set forth. scribed.
3. The jar A, having spiral lugs, in combi- H. M; GUILD. 5 nation with the lid B, having vent O and re- WVitnesses:
