Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. LANE, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK.
IM PROVED CAM P-C-H EST.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,529, dated October 22,1861.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. LANE, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Camp-Chest; and I do hereby declare that the following'- is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective View; 2, a back longitudinal view; Fig. 3, a bolt with section of chest; Fig. 4, a corner-section; Fig. 5, a section of table-leg. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the chest opened so as to form a substantial table.
The construction of the chest is such that it may easily be converted into a table, which I will proceed to describe as follows:
The chest consists of two equal parts A A2, Fig. l, as shown in the accompanying drawings.
B. and B2 represent two supplemental covers, which are hinged on the front side of top and bottomv of" chest C C, (and more fully shown in Fig. 6, letters m n o 19,) the chest and covers being open. The covers are also further secured to the chest by hasps D and E, Fig. 2, they being on the back side of the chest, whieh, being buttoned onto pins ocx, are fastened together. Hasp D is secured permanently to the edge ot' cover B and buttons onto A', while hasp E is permanently secured to A2 and buttons onto B2, by which peculiar arrangement (one hasp being directly opposite the other, which secures comeliness to the chest; also, when the chest is open one hasp is out of the way of the other) hasp E is made to secure the parts A and A2 (when open) iirmly together, as shown at a, Fig. 6, thereby making it answer a double purpose.
Letter b in Fig. 3 represents a bolt or portable dowel fastened to A on the inside of the chest, so as to pass through the top and bottom of A and A2 into the supplemental covers, as shown by 7; and l in Figs. 3 and G,
which is for the purpose of making the covers more stable and preventing them from being broken loose by handling. The great advantage attained by having them movable is that when the chest is used for a table they maybe drawn or pushed out of the way, which gives the table a lnore even surface and appearance than if stationary.
Fig. 4 represents an inside corner section of corners l 2 3 et, Fig. l, to which are firmly fastened-the corner-plates, as shown at F, Fig. 4, made from suitable metal, having each fourapertures c d ef, similar to inverted keyholes, into which the four screw-heads g h (shown in Fig. 5) enter, when by sliding the screw-heads into the narrow part ot' the apertures in F, Fig. 4, a most reliable fastening is obtain ed for the legs. The advantage of having screws in the legs for locking them to the plate F is that each screw presents surfaces alike to the inside of the plate F whichever way they are turned; also, that they form a Very much more substantial and cheaper fastening than heretofore used; and, further, either of the legs may be used for either corner, and, still further, if the legs should at any time become loose from shrinkage or too tight by the swelling of the wooden parts they may be tightened or loosened by simply turning the screw with a common driver.
The object attained by hinging supplemental covers to a camp-chest, as shown and described, is to increase the size of the table and make it more complete in form, also that of making the table-leaves self-supporting.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the supplemental covers B and B2, hasp E, movable dowel b, and locking device F, operating substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
