Description
` UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
JOI-IN H. VEAVER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
' BURIAL-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,261, dated. May 7, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oI-IN H. VEAVER, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Burial-Oase; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part .of this specication.
Figure 1, is a representation of the front side of my improved burial case, and also of the inner side of the outer cover thereof,
which is represented in an open position; Fig. 2. is a top view of said burial case, as seen while its outer cover is in the open position shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3, is a transverse section of said burial case, as seen while its cover is in a closed position.
The first peculiarity of my improved burial case consists in its having parallel sides from end to end; thereby avoiding the repulsive form of theold style of coffin.
The second peculiarity of said case, consists in its having two hinged and lock-furnished covers, viz: an intermediate glasscover b, which is hinged to the body a, of the burial case, and a solid outer cover o, which is hinged to the frame of the afore said glass cover, as represented in the accompanying drawings.
The joint between the frame of the glass cover and the sides of the body of my improved burial case, I shall generally make air-tight by the use of stripsof india rubber. gutta percha, or other suitable material.
In constructing the smaller sizes of my improved burial cases, I shall place but one lock upon each of the covers thereof, as represented in the accompanying drawings. And upon the respective outer and inner covers of the larger sizes of said burial cases, I shall place two locks, or' more should they be called for.
The plate of glass d, which is inserted in the frame of the inner cover b of my improved burial case, may extend the entire length of said cover, as shown in the accompanying drawings, or it may extend only a portion of the length of said cover, and the remainder of the same may be covered with any suitable upholstering material, or may be closed by a solid panel of any suitable wood.
A suitable style for the upholstering of A good position for the tabletplate to bel placed upon my improved style of burying case. is the central portion of the interior surface of the outer cover of said case, as shown at e, in Fig. l.
Having thus fully described my improved burial case, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
' The intermediate hinged and lock-furnished glass cover b, when it is protected by the exterior hinged and lock-furnished solid cover 0, substantially in the manner herein set forth. Y
The above specication of my improved burial case, signed and witnessed this 5th day of February, 1861.
JOHN H. WEAVER.
