IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,51! dated October 22, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Bc it known that I, A. P. BARLOW, of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NVaShing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section.

The nature of myinventiou consists in the peculiar arrangements of the several parts hereinafter set forth.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents a low box inelosed on three sides, as shown in Fig. 2.

b b are rounds, which are secured longitudinally across the bottom of box A. Said rounds should be scalloped and placed together in an irregular manner, as fully seen in Fig. l.

(l represents a cross-piece, which divides `the boxin two divisions, the object of which will be more fully appreciated hereinafter.

B is a roller and is confined by means of the dovetailed slides c a. The obj ect of this roller .being thus arranged is to rinse the clothes by drawing them between the cross-piece d and said roller.

C represents two uprights secured to the box A. A space should be cut out at the top of each of these uprights, and a dovetail groove cut in the sides of said spaces. A hole should also be bored at their bottoms, as shown by section-lines in Fig. 2.'

e e are tongued blocks, which slide in the A grooves just described. Said blocks are provided with projections which extend down in holes above referred to for the purpose of steadying their motion.

ff are spiral springs placed beneath blocks e. e. D is a cross-piece secured between said blocks so arranged that it will lock freely.

g g are vertical beams attached to crosspiece D.

E represents the rubbing apparatus, composed of side pieces 7L 7?. and scalloped rollers k k. These rollers should also be arranged irregularly-that is, the larger parts of one should till the smaller parts of the one next to it. This rubber is secured at the bottom of the vertical beams by means of a rod extending loosely through the side pieces, as seen at letter t in Fig. 2.

The operation of my machine is obvious, being only necessary to put a sufficient quantity of water in the box with the articles to be washed, and then, pressing on the rubber,

you swing it to and fro until the clothing is A entirely cleansed.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The swinging rubber E, scalloped rollers b b, roller B, blocks e e, and spiral springfjwhen the whole shall be constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose specified. In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
