CUE-TIP FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,648, dated January 19, 1886.

Application filed November 28, 1884. Serial No. 149,031.

Be it known that I, TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadephia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Cue-Tip Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a cue-tip fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof in line as m, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists of a cue-tip fastener formed of a yoke with a cross-bar having slotted guide-grooves and a wedge-shaped clamp having guide-tongues and outwardly-extending handles at their lower ends, the operation whereof being hereinafter fully set forth.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a yoke, and B represents a cross-bar connecting the ends of the limbs thereof. In the crossbar, on opposite sides thereof, are recesses a, in which are fitted sliding clamps O, the backs whereof are formed with tongues D, the same entering recesses or grooves 12 in the cross-bar, whereby the clamps are permitted to slide, and are also properly guided and prevented from lateral displacement. At the lower ends of the tongues D are outwardly extending handles, whereby the clamps may be moved by hand in either direction to tighten or release the cue. At what may be termed the upper ends of the clamps are lugs E, the same projecting so as to overhang the crossbar B, whereby the clamps are prevented from dropping through said cross-bar. These lugs are formed with the clamps so as to pass through the cross-bar, and when the clamps are fitted in position said lugs are bent outwardly or downwardly, so that they form obstacles to the passage of the clamps through the cross-bar from below. mented and fitted to the end of the cue, and the latter inserted between the clamps, which have been pushed toward the crown of the yoke, so that the space between the curved faces of the clamps readily permits the pas- 6 sage of the one. The one is now moved forward to full extent, so that the tip is pressed against the crown of the yoke, and the clamps are then drawn out, whereby they tighten against the side of the cue and retain it in po- 7o sition. The cue is now struck smartly on the floor or elsewhere on its butt-end, whereby the clamps take greater hold on the one and the tip is forcibly pressed against the end of the cue, where it is held until dry, the fastening being thereby reliably effected. The clamps, owing to their curved faces, do not indent the cue with which they are in contact, and thus the surface of the same is not broken, nicked, or otherwise injured. When the fastening of the tip is accomplished, the clamps are forced in, or in the direction toward the crown of the yoke, whereby they are released of their holding power on the cue, and the latter may then be removed. 8 5

I am aware that it is old to employ a yoke having a spring tip-plate and slides to clamp the same on the cue, the said slides, which are composed of triangular pieces faced with rubber, being forced down from above be- 0 tween the stays, and the cue sliding on the stays; but such are liable to become displaced laterally, which is not the case with the form shown and described by me in this application,owing to thelugsEand tonguesD claimed 5 herein.
