BENJAMIN A. DRAYTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BIRD-CAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,573, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed October 12, 1885. Serial No. 179,634. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. DRAY- TON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bird Cage, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in bottoms for bird-cages; and the object is to improve the construction of the base-piece of the cage, and to provide, in connection therewith a bottom mat or sliding bottom, which can be more conveniently withdrawn from the cage without removing the base than in the cages heretofore made.
My invention therefore consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and as will be specifically pointed out in the claims made hereto.
I have fully illustrated my improvements in the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a cage with my improvements, showing the cage-frame seated on the cross-piece of the sliding bottom. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base of ,the cage. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the? sliding bottom. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the base. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the sliding bottom, and Fig. 6 is a view in longitudinal section showing the parts united.
Reference being bad to the drawings, the letter A designates the base or bottom of the cage. This consists of a single piece of sheet metal struck out with any desired exterior walls of the floor of the bottom, the floor being laid on alevel with the base of the walls a, and is extended to a line across the open ends of the walls. The ends of the walls of the bottom are preferably curved, and intersect the curve or form of the outer walls, a short shoulder, a, being formed at their connection to give a seat for the cross-piece of the sliding bottom and a neat connection of the parts.
The letter B designates the sliding bottom, consisting of a dish or plate, 12, the floor of which fits the floor of the cagebottom, and having walls on all sides, with flanged edges 12 to set on the shoulders a of the bottom. Across-one end of this sliding bottom is secured an end piece, b the ends of which project somewhat beyond the sides of the sliding bottom, and the plate of which is struck to the form of the contour of the walls a. To the cross-piece of the sliding bottom is fixed a knob or other device for conveniencein drawing it out and inserting it, substantially as shown.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a bottom for a cage, which is formed of a single piece, having a basin or floor surrounded with walls on three sides and an open end, and adapted thereto a sliding bottom having an end cross-piece,which,when seated in position, forms the end or fourth wall of the bottom. The sliding bottom is held in position by a slight pressure of the base-wire of the cage-frame on the cross-piece of the slide.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sheet-metal sliding-bottom consisting of abasin having vertical walls and flanged edges, and provided with an end cross-piece formed to make one side of the bottom flanges of the bottom when set in the cage, substantially as described.
2. The bottom A, struck from a single piece of sheet metal, with base-walls a,extended on but three sides thereof, a rib, a, formed on the top of the main walls, and a seat or shoulder, a forming a basin having an open end, in combination with the sliding bottom 13,
consisting of a single piece of sheet metal In witness whereof I have hereunto set my formed into a basin having vertical walls with hand in the presence of two attesting witedge flanges, and provided with an end erossnesses. piece adapted to close the opening between 5 the end walls and form a continuation there- Attest:
IIARRY W. LAWREXCE, CHAS. F. FRIED.
BENJ. A. DRAYTON.
of, substantially as described, and for thepurpose stated.
