AUTOMATIC SAFETY GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,572, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed July 24, 1885. Serial No. 172,566. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DOUTNEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Gas-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved automatic gas burner which closes automatically when the gas is blown out, or can be closed at any time by pulling a string or cord.
The invention consists in a gasburner having a spring acting on the cock to turn the same, a lever for locking the cock in place when open, and a fanor disk on the lever,adjacent to the top of the burner, and also a chain and lever for tripping the above-mentioned lever.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved gasburner. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the under side or lower end of the plug. Fig.5 is a detail of a modification.
The gas-fixture A, of any well-known construction, pattern, or shape, is provided with the plug B, havinga handle, 0, on its lower end for turning it, and the upper end is provided with a flange or top disk, D, in the bottom edge of which ratchet-teeth E are cut, a
with which one end of a lever, F, can engage, whichlever is pivoted on jaws or other projections, F, on the top of the box G or other part of the fixture. On the upper end of the said lever F a concave fan or plate, H, is held adjacent to the tip I of the burner. A springlever, J, is secured on the burner-tube, and
its free end is close to the lever F; A chain,
or rod, K, secured to the lever J, hangs downward from the same. A spiral spring, L, is secured to the plug B and to the box G, as shown in Fig. 3; or anyother spring may be used to act on the plug, and may be connected with the same on the top or bottom of the fixture, as shown in Fig. 5.
The plug B has a quadrant projection, m, and the box G a semicircular recess, n, in its bottom edge, against the ends of which recess the ends of the projection m can strike, the said projection and recess thus forming stops for the plug B.
To open the cock for lighting the gas, the plug B is turned in such a manner as to coil the spring L,or bring it in higher tension, and the plug is locked in place by the lower end of the lever F engaging with the teeth E.
When a person blows out the gas, the air or wind is caught by the concave fan or wing H, which is moved in the direction of the arrow 0., whereby the lower end-of the lever F is moved downward and disengaged from the teethE, thus permitting the spring L to uncoil and turn the plug B, so as to shut off the gas.
To close the cook, the chain K is pulled, causing the spring-lever J to push the lever F in the direction of the arrow a, and thus releasing the plug. The plug is locked every time it is opened, and can only be closed afterit has been disengaged from the lever F.
As the plug has a number of teeth, E, it can be locked when partly or entirely open.
The lever F may be made of two parts, one carrying the plate H and the other locking the plug, and the two parts acting together.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a gas-fixture and cock, of a ratchet on the cock-plug, a spring acting on the plug, and a lever for locking the plug by engagement with the teeth in the 'same,and a fan or plate on said lever in proximity to the burner, substantially as herein shown and described. v
2. The combination, with a gas-fixture and cook, of a ratchet on the plug, a spring acting on said plug, a lever pivoted on the plug casing or box and engaging with the teeth on the plug, a fan or plate on the upper end of said lever, a lever resting against the lever carrying the fan, and a chain or wire con- 2 sa4,s72
