To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI N. BACHAND, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Frame for Draping Fringe and other Goods of 2. Similar Character for Shipment and Storage, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the improvement is to provide a frame adapted to fit the shipping-case for draping the fringe, so that each layer will be supported independently of or not in contact with the others, to prevent the goods from being damaged by matting by being compressed one layer against or upon the other.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the frame out of the case. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on linear :0, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a portion of a horizontal section enlarged. Fig. 4. is a portion of a rear or end View enlarged.

A designates an end frame made of wire, and provided with across-piece, D, fastened about the-center. There are two of these end framesone for each end of the completed frameand the cross-piece D of one of them is provided with a tube, B, and of the other with a rod, 0, adapted to fit into the tube and be fastened in by a thumb-screw, E, set in the tube.

The end pieces, A, may be made of pieces of boards corresponding in size with the end frames, and attached by a rod near the bottom, instead of the rod and tube near the center. Such construction will answer the purpose very well; but the wire end frames connected by the adjustable connection formed by the rod and tube near thecenter are preferable, because the frame can be made lighter, which is a desideratum.

Gross-pieces a, provided with hooks a, are attached to the end pieces for catching the fringe. These hooks are preferably arranged with reference to each other vertically so that the hooks of any cross-piece will come between those of the one next above. The cross pieces are also preferably made adjustable, so that they may be raised and lowered, so

that their positions will correspond to different widths of fringe. This adjustability is best secured bya spring, a, fastened to the ends of each of the cross-pieces a, so as to clasp around the upright sides of the end frame, or over the outer edges of the board, if the end pieces should be made of board, so that the cross-pieces are thereby held in place, and may be slipped up or down a little, as desired.

The frame thus constructed is made of the proper size to fit and fill a paper box or case of convenient size to hold (as a package) a bolt or more of fringe of eighteen or twenty yards, (more or less,) as it is manufactured in convenient size for handling in shipment and sale, the construction of the frame and the arrangement of the hooks being such that the fringe may be draped thereon so as to hang free in strands between the end pieces of the frame in rows or layers, filling the case from top to bottom, not in contact with each other, the sides of the case, or anything, and

yet substantially fill the case. Fringes may thus be put up in packages which may be shipped and kept in stock and handled in retailing without being damaged in the least by being tangled or rnatted.

The connection of the end pieces, consisting of the rod and tube fastened by the thumbscrew, may be lengthened or shortened, and after the fringe is draped on the frame it may be stretched and held taut by first loosening the thumb-screw and slightly extending and then securing the connection in the extended position. For this purpose the thumb-screw is placed on the under side of the tube, so that it can be reached from the bottom by passing the fingers up between the layers of fringe.

What is claimed is 1. A small frame adapted to be inclosed in a box for packing fringe or other like goods, and having two end pieces, as A A, connected or supported in a vertical or upright position, and provided with hooks a a upon their coincident sides, arranged to hold the layers or strands of fringe apart in the case, substantially as specified.
