.ZJV'VEW'TOR Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
LESTER B. KENNEY, OF CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,388, dated January 12, 1886.
Application led November 7, 1885v Serial Xo. 182,139. (No model.)
y tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its objects to provide for sustaining the couplinghook in the draw-head positively when down and engaging the coupling-link, or when up for the reception of the coupling-link, so as to obviate the necessity of the train-hands passing between the cars for coupling and nncoupling the saine, as more Vfully hereinafter set forth.
rlhe invention further has for its objects to provide for the adjustment of the draw-heads so that trucks of different heights may be readily and conveniently connected, `as will more fully hereinafter appear.
The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of a car, showing my improved coupling applied thereto; Fig. 2, a bottom View of a car, showing the mechanism for elevating and depressing the draw-head; and Fig. 3, adetached sectional view, showing the spring at the rear of the draw-bar.
The letter A indicates the body of the car, which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction.
B indicates the draw-bar, which is located between the two longitudinal beams C, secured under the body of the car. The said draw-bar is capable of a slight longitudinal movement between its longitudinal bearings,
g and near its rear it is provided with a bearing-plate, E, behind which is located a spiral spring, F, which bears against a similar plate, G, which is securely fastened at the back or rear of the bearings before mentioned. The
plate F projects into recesses H in the longigo tudinal beams, so as to work back and fort-h therein and be guided thereby. The drawbar is secured at its rear end in a box, I, which is arranged to slide between the longitudinal bearingsin such manner that its forward end may be raised or lowered to adjust it to the proper position, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The draw-bar is slottedlongitudinally on its lower side, as indicated by the letter K, and into the slot extends a flat spring, L, which is rigidly secured at M to the rear of the draw-bar. The draw-head is formed with the usual Haring opening, N, and is slotted vertically for the reception of the coupling-hook P, which is pivoted therein on a pin, R. The said hook at its rear is provided with flat bearing-faces S T, which are adapted to set against the spring, when the hook is either elevated or depressed, and hold it securely.
The hook is provided at its upward projecting corner with an eye, U, to which is connected a'chain, W', which extends to andconnects with thelevers X, located in bearings at the front of the car, whereby the hook may be operated from one side of the car or from the top of the same.
Below the draw-head is located a transverse bar, A', through which extends an adjusting screw, B', by means of which the draw-head may be elevated or lowered, so as to adapt the coupling to trucks of different heights.'
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A draw-bar having a vertical adjustment and a limited longitudinal play, combined with the flat spring secured thereto and the coupling-hook provided with fiat bearing-faces at its rear end, adapted to rest on the spring, substantially as specified.
2 The combination, with the draw-bar, of the iiat spring secured thereto and the coupling-hook provided with dat bearing-faces at its rear, adapted to rest upon the spring and hold the hook in position, substantially as specied.
3. The combination, with the pivoted draw- In testimony whereof I alx my signature,in bar, of the eonplinghook pivoted therein and presence oftwo Witnesses, this 21st day of Octolo having flat; bearing-faces at its rear end, a ber, 1885.
Spring secured to the draw-bar and engaging 4 v T f 5 with said end of the hook, and the connecting LESTER B KEBBT chains and levers, whereby said hook maybe Vitlesses:
operated from the top or either side of the E. S. LACEY,
car, substantially :1s seb forth. A. J. IYES.
