A. T. SCHULTZ.
UAR GOUPLING.
No. 273,167. Patented Feb. 27.1883.
,d INVBNTOR': I as? if ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ALBERT '1. SCHULTZ, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,167, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed November 529, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,-ALBERT T. SoHUL'rz, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Car-Gouplin g, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in car-couplin gs, having for its object to cause the automatic coupling of the cars and the ready uncoupling of the same with perfect safety to the operator, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of my improved coupling applied to a freight-car in the duplicate arrangement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the single form applied to the platform of a car, the section being on line a: w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lever contrivance for raising the link. Fig. at is a perspective view of a portion of the couplinghook, and Fig. 5 is a detail showingthe bufferspring to the draw-bar.
I propose to arrange a coupling-hook, a, in a recess, 1), in the upper side of the draw-bar c, pivoting it at (l in the back part of the drawbar, and havinga hook-point, e, dropping down on the bottom f of the link-socket, behind the bell-mouth h, where the link enters, said hookpoint being suitably curved at t, to enable the link to be forced under the point of the hook when the cars run together, and thus raise the hook to enable it to fall in thelink and couple self-actin gl y.
To raise the hook from the sides or tops of the cars, and thus avoid going in between them, I connect it by a chain,j, with a short lever, k, pivoted in a support, I, and connected with levers m, extending to the respective sidesof the car, and also with rod at, extending upward to be worked from either side or the top, said .levers being pivoted at 0 to the end of the carbody or other supports, and arranged in guards p, suitably attached to the end of the car.
I propose also, in case it may be desired, to provide the hook with a butter-head, q, to be employed for buffing, instead of the end of the draw bar, the rear end of the hook being strongly mounted on the pin 0?, and re-enforced by contact of the end with the shoulder of the recess b, said bufier head also serving to weight the hook and cause it to be more cer tain of falling into and engaging the link; or the hook may have weights s attached, if. desired.
For coupling cars of different heights I propose to duplicate the draw-bar and couplinghook, as shown in Fig. 1, extending the chain through the upper hook to the lower one, so that both will be subject to the control of the attendant by the levers m and rod n. In this case the brackets t, for the connectionvof the draw-bar, will be made double, or extended double the depth or a little more, to provide space for the two draw-bars, which space will be divided by the cross-bar 20. (Dotted in Fig. 1.) Both the draw-bars will be connected by the pin '2: in the slots 20, and will be provided with buffer-springs at, which I propose to connect with the beam 2 by two staples, y, for more substantial connection.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the recessed draw-bar 0, having the bell-shaped mouth It and buffer q, of the pivoted couplinghook at 6, having the side pieces, 3, resting against the bufl'er q, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the recessed draw-bar c, the pivoted coupling-hook a e, the lever 70, having its bearing in a slotted upright, l, and connected by a chain,j, to the coupling-hook, and the hand-levers m, pivoted at points 0 on opposite sides of the lever k, the latter passing through said levers on, said levers m adapted to be operated from the sides of the car, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination of the recessed draw-bar 0, the pivoted coupling-hook a e, the lever 70, connected by the chainj to the coupling-hook, and fulcrumed in the slotted 5 upright l, the upright lever it, connected to the inner end of the lever is, and capable of oper ation from the top of the car, and the hand-levers m, pivoted at points 0 on opposite sides of the lever 70, the latter passing through the levers m, said levers m adapted to be operated 1c from the sides of the car, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
