ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,346, dated January 12, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. BUNKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the State of Illinois,.haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Attach ments for Rocking-Chairs, for which I filed an application for Letters Patent November 3, 1884, Serial No. 147,067, and of which the following is a divisional specification.

The object of my invention is to make an attachment for rocking-chair springs that will hold the ends of the spring rigidly when in place, and at the same time enable the Spring to be removed and the chair shipped in separate pieces without disturbing or removing the brackets from their position on the rockers or base-rails; 'and the invention consists in the features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my improved bracket having retainingshoulders on its side projections adapted to be inserted between the last two coils of a spring, so as to be on the inside of the end coil, and a middle retaining-shoulder against which the end coil presses or abuts, and which is on the outside thereof when the spring is in place; and Fig. 2 shows the same, except that the retaining-shoulders are made in a some hat different form.

In constructing my improved bracket B, I cast the same with projections F and G at the sides, and on these projections, and also about half way therebetween, I make. retainingshoulders 0, those on the side projections bebeing preferably, but not necessarily, wedge-- shaped. I then take the coiled spring A and place it in proper position between the projections on the bracket and against the edge of the retaining-shoulders on the side projections. I then push the spring into place, the shoulders on the side projections opening its coils until they have passed through the same and the end coil has adjusted itself to the position shown by dotted lines. The spring being thus in place, the shoulders on the side projections are on the inside and the middle shoulder on the outside of its end coil, and by this means the spring is securely fastened and held in place. In removing the spring the coils are pried apart by any convenient tool-as, for instance, a screw-driversufficiently to raise the end coil above the side retaining shoulders, and this of course permits the springt'o be then readily removed.

I do not here claim, broadly, a bracket provided with retaining-shoulders to hold the spring in place, the same being the subject of another application of which this is a division; but

What I now claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bracket for platform rocking-chair attachments, having side and middle shoulders for securing one end of the spring, the side shoulders being on the inside and the middle shoulder being on the outside of the end coil when the spring is in place, substantially as described.

Bunker, of Chicago, Illinois, for an improvement in Attachments for Bocliing-(Jhairsf the date of filing the application, printed at the head of the specification, to wit, December 21, 1885, is erroneous; that said date of tiling should have been printed as follows: Original application No. 147,067, filed November 3, 1884, divided, and this division, N0. 186,370, filed December 21,1885,- and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein to conform to the papers pertaining to the case in the Patent Oflice.
