Description
Sept. 26, 1967 B. A. DARVIE 3,343,230
' DETACHABLE ORNAMENT/XL COVER FOR A SHIRT BUTTON Filed Oct. 28, 1964 INVENTOR. BERNARD A. MR IE United States Patent 3,343,230 DETACHABLE ORNAMENTAL COVER FOR A SHIRT BU'ITON Bernard A. Dar-vie, 2685 University Ave. Bronx, N.Y. 10468 Filed Oct. 28, 1964, Ser. No. 407,045 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-113) This invention relates in general to ornamental devices particularly for clothing and, in particular, to a new and useful cuff link for shirts with sleeves having button closures.
Cuff links for shirts are well known for use with shirts having a sleeve formation .with the two end portions formed with openings for threading a central portion of the cutf link through the openings to interconnect the end portions. When shirts are provided with buttons, only one opening is made and prior to the present invention it was not possible to use cutf links with such a shirt.
The present invention provides a novel cuff link for use with shirts which have the ordinary button closure. In accordance with the invention there is provided a fastening member having one side which is adapted to contain an ornamentation or a jewel and another side which includes a forked member which may easily engage around a button of a shirt when the button is in a closed position. The device is particularly useable as a cuff link, but of course, it may be used, for example, for the mounting of studs, or other ornamental devices over buttons or other fastening elements of a shirt or other articles.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, there is provided a clothing or article ornamenting device which includes a flat portion adapted to contain an ornamentation or a jewel and an engaging portion comprising a forked element disposed substantially in parallel spaced relationship to the fiat portion and forming an opening between said forked legs to permit the device to he slid over a button or similar element. A feature of the invention is the simplicity of construction which permits the flat portion or base to be ornamented itself or to form a supporting platform for the mounting of a jewel or other ornamentation. In the case of the mounting of a separate jewel, the jewel is secured to the flat base portion such as by adhesive or glue, or it is riveted in position by a novel and inexpensive arrangement.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved ornamentation device'for shirts and similar articles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cuff link which includes a fiat portion which is adapted to be ornamented or contain a jawel and a button engaging portion which is advantageously formed as a forked member arranged in spaced relationship with the flat portion and providing means for securing the device over a projection such as a button.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cufl? link construction which includes a base member having a flat base portion with a forked shaped button engaging portion arranged in spaced parallel position thereto and with a jewel or other ornamental device secured to the base portion by means of a ri-vet which extends through the mounting of the jewel and which is engaged through an opening defined in the fiat base portion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cuff link or similar device which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claim annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there are illustrated and described preferred embodiments of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of a cuff link constructed in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a cuff link in position on a shirt with the jewel assembled to the base portion;
FIG. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional view of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in particular, the invention embodied therein FIGS. 1 and 3 comprises a cufi link generally designated 10 including a main body portion generally designated 12, a jewel or ornamental device mounting portion, generally designated 14, and a jewel or similar ornamental device generally designated 16.
In accordance with the invention the main body portion comprises a flat base or mounting portion 18 and a forked portion 20 which is arranged in spaced parallel relationship therewith and which is joined to the fiat base portion by a curved side wall 21. The forked portion 20 includes legs 20a and 2012 with an opening defined therebetween to permit the threads 23 of a button 22 on a shirt sleeve 24 to be passed therethrou-gh. As indicated in FIGS. 2 and 3, When the cuff link body 12 is in position, the button will rest on the forked shaped portion 20 between the latter and the base portion 18.
In the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 3, the base portion 18, although it could easily be, is not ornamented itself, but is provided with a jewel mounting base 14 having a jewel 16. In the preferred arrangement the jewel mounting base 14 is provided with an opening 14a which receives a rivet member 26 which is directed through the opening 14a and an opening 18a in the base portion 18. Before the rivet is positioned in place, however, the jewel 16 is mounted on the base portion 14 and covers the rivet head 26a and thus locks the rivet 26 between the jewel 16 and the base 14. The jewel 16 is held in place by crimping the side portions 14b of the jewel mounting base 14.
After the rivet 26 is engaged in the opening 18a it is upset or flattened to form a widened portion to hold the jewel and its base 14 tightly to the base 18.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, in which the button 22 is held by threads to the shirt sleeve 24', the ornamentation is formed either directly on the base portion 18' or the base portion 18 receives a jewel assembly 28 which is secured to the base portion 18' such as by glueing as at 30.
It should be appreciated that the device is particularly useful for covering buttons of a shirt having a sleeve with an ordinary button closing. In this manner, the covering of the button produces the effect of the wearing of cutf links. The device is equally useful in the covering of buttons on the front of the shirt, for example, in order to provide an ornamentation or stud for the front of the shirt. It is obvious that the device may also be employed to cover any projection similar to a button on an article or clothing or even luggage, furniture, etc.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application 7 of the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
A device for use on a shirt having a sleeve with the usual button closure with a button extending through a button hole, the button being secured to the shirt by thread, comprising a fiat base portion adapted to have an ornamentation on one side, a forked member secured to said base portion and having a pair of spaced parallel legs arranged in parallel relationship to said base portion and defining with said base portion and said parallel legs a space therebetween for receiving the button, the legs being separated enough to accommodate the thread holding the button to the shirt, said base portion having an opening defined therethrough, a jewel mounting base having an opening defined therethrough in alignment with the opening of said base portion, a rivet having a widened head and extending through the openings of said jewel mounting base and said base portion and being secured to said base portion by widening the opposite end thereof and flattening it against said base portion, and a jewel held in said jewel mounting base.
