STOP-COCK BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,137, dated January 12, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN 0. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Stop-Cock Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
In Letters Patent No. 311,265, granted J anuary 27, 1885, I have shown a tubular metallic stop-cock box forked at the lower end and provided with feet, and movable side plates surrounding the water-pipe and filling in the spaces around such water-pipe at the fork, to prevent earth passing into the box.
My present invention is an improvement upon the same, by which the construction is simplified, and the soldered or other joints between the pipes and the cock can be made with greater facility, because they can be completed previous to applying any of the parts of the stop-cock box.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the stopcock box. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at the line :0 a, Fig. 1, without the cock and pipes. Fig. 3 is a view of the lower end of the tubular stop-cock box, show ing the movable base in two pieces. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same at the line y y, Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the upper part of the tubular cock-box in larger size.
The pipes a, cock'b, rod or key 0, and tubular stop-cock box (1, with its forks e and feet f, are similar to those in my aforesaid patent, except that I make the upper part of the box (I as a screw-formed corrugation, and the cappiece (1 is made to screw upon this screw formed corrugation for connecting the parts permanently together, and this construction allows for the adjustment of the cap-piece to suit differences in the pavement or sidewalk. The exterior of this guidering u is not circular. There are projections 4 and 5, that are received into corresponding notches at the upper end of the box cl, and there are also notches 6 and 7 in the edges of the ring a, and corresponding notches in the inner surfaces of the tubular box 66, at the upper end thereof. The flanges r are provided within the tubular box (Z near the upper end, and upon the flanges the guide-ring a rests, as in my aforesaid patent; but I secure the ring a in place by pins or nails driven into the notches 6 and 7. These pins act as wedges, to cause the upper end of the tubular box (I to bind upon and hold the projections 4 and 5.
The devices in aforesaid patent are adapted to stop-cocks that are opened or closed by a quarter-turn but my present improvement is especially intended for use with a screwvalve in which the spindle rises as the cock is opened. The screw valve or cock is held firmly at the base of the tubular box, as hereinafter described, and the rod extends up from the stem of the screwvalve and passes through the guide-ring u, and terminates as a square for a key. Upon this rod 0, I place a ring or disk, 12, and attach the same firmly by a cross-pin or otherwise, and this is placed so that it will come in contact with and stop against the under side of the ring a just before the valve is raised to its extreme height; hence there will be no risk of the screw-valve spindle being twisted off by a careless workman in opening the valve. I make use of a movable base, L, in one or two parts, the same being adapted to passing in between the forks 7 5 e. The upper edges of the vertical projecting portions of the base L are notched at 2 to correspond with the circular portions of the branch pipes of the cock I), and there are flanges Z' extending out to form bea-ringsurfaces for this base-piece. The basepiece is to be placed beneath the cock I), with the tubular arms of such cock resting in the notches l and after the pipes a a have been joined to said cock I) the box (Z is put in place, the forks e passing over the tubular arms of the cock, so as to exclude earth from-the stopcock. The lower end of the box at within the forks 0 may be either circular or polygonal, and the vertical portions of thebase-piece pass in between the 0 forks, as shown. The base-piece may be one casting, having the two notched projections l rising from its flat or nearly-flat base; but this base-piece may be in two halves, the bottom portions of each being of a size and shape 9 5 adapted to pass in between the bottom flanges or feet, f, of the tube d, to which they may be secured by wires passing through holes, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4.
