Description
Unirse STATES PATENT OFFICE..
iMPRovEMENi- IN MACHINERY Foa-WASHING WOOL.
Specifici-dion forming partei. Letters ntent No. 2f?. l0, dated (")iiol'vl l.- INH.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that we, R. G. TURNER and` j ll. ROBINSON, both olllast Dedham, in the conn ty of Norfolk and State'of lllassachusetts,
, lsimple and efficient machine to'supersedethev inanualprocess 0f washing wool, one that will not only expedite the process, but also perform' the Work more thoroughly than can be donev by hand.
` The invention consists in the-employment or use of an oval washtub provided with a longitudinal central partition, a' rotary paddle, endless conveyenand pressure-rollers, all
. arranged to operate as hereinafter described to effect the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, We
- will proceed to describe it.
A represents an oval or elliptical tub of` 4any suitable dimensions and provided with a central partition B, which does not extend the Whole lengthofthe tub, spaces o a being allowed at the ends, said spaces a being equal in Width to the spaces between Vthe partition B and the'sides of the tub.
C is-a rotary paddle, which is formed of a 'proper number of blades b, attached to a shaft c, said blades being straight` a great portion of 'their length, and their ends slightly curved, as shown clearly in'Fig.. l. The paddle C is placed at one side of the partition B at about its center, the shaft c having its bearings (1, one on the top ofv the partition B and the other on the top of' the tub A at one side.' (Seellig. 2. I l
.l''is a frame which is. formed of two ment sides c e, connected by cross-bars f. The segment sides c c are lhung loosely on a shaft E, which isplaced on the tub A at the sido of the partition il. opposite to paddle C.
VThe outer edges ol' the sides c e are toothed and gear into pinionsff on a shaft l`, which is placed on the tub parallel with shaft E.
Between the outer parts of the sides c c of; l
frame D there is placed a cylinder G, around which and the'sliafill an endless apron ll of slats is placed.
I l arci-wo pressure-rol Iers, which are placed one over the other, the upper roller 'having'.
springs -r/ pressing upon its bearings 7i, the
lower roller having its journals in stationary` bearings. The bearing-sof these 'rollers are placed in 11p-rights J J, one being on the partition ll and the other'on the edge of the tub A. The lorrer roller I has a pulley L' on one of its journals, around which` and a pulley 7' on the shaft E a belt 7o passes.
K is an endless apron, which passes around rollers'ZZ at the upper part of the tub A. The
upper surface ot this apron K is in line with the bite of the rollers Il, and said apron is slightly inclined, as shown in Fig. l.. The endless apron K is driven by a band *m from the pulleyc' .of the 4lower pressure-roller I, the two rollers Z Z being connected by a band m.
The operation is as follows: The Wool to be washed is placed in the tub A, which is supplied with a requisite quantity of water,
and the paddle C is rotatedl in the direction indicated by arrow'l, Fig. 1. of paddle C causes the Water and Wool to ein culate around Within vtheV tub A, the curved ends of the blades Z) preventing the Wool being lifted ont of the Water by their rotation.V By this circulation of the Water and -Wooljwithin the tub A the Wool is thoroughly cleansed in a short time, and during this cleansing operationthe segment sides e e, and
consequently the endless apron of slats H, are elevated. by turning the shaft E so that the apron will be above the Water and Wool.- After the Wool is thoroughlywashed the frameD and apron H are lowered, and motion being given said apron by the application of power to shaft E the'apron l-IV carries np the washed Woolto the pressure-rollers I l, through which it passes, and-has the Water expressed from it, the Wool being discharged t rom the top of the tub bythe apron K.
rPhe whole device is extremely simple and etlicient, and one person can attend to several machines.
