W. B. MILLER. COMBINATIONYSGRAPER, OLODGUARVD', AND GAGE. No. 334,082. Patented Jan. 12, 1886.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. MILLER, OF HAMPTON, ARKANSAS.
COMBINATION SCRAPER, CLOD-GUARD, AND GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,082, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed September 4, 1885. Serial No. 176,144. (1\'o model.) I
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \V. B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton,in the county of Calhoun and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Scraper, Glod- Guard, and Gage; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My inventionhas relation to cultivators and scrapers, the construction and novelty being hereinafter fully and clearly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my cultivator and scraper. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the cutter and clodguard. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the gage. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the main and cross beams.
Myinvention is described as follows: Across the main beam 1, at an acute angle, I fasten a crossbeam, 2. The said beams are joined by cutting halfway through each, and are held together by bolts 3, passing horizontally through the forward end of the beam 2, and through beam 1 another bolt, 4, also passes horizontally through the rear end of both beams 1 and On one side of the beam 1. and in front of the handles 5 is bolted a clod fender, 6., The said fender near its upper end curves outward to allow the bottom edge, 7, to come close to the end of the scraper 8, so that it cuts a straight line near the crop, and prevents I clods, stones, &c., from being thrown over on the plants by the action of the said scraper. The scraper 8 is held in position by two braces, 9 and 10. The upper end of the brace 9 is bolted into the front end of the cross-beam 2, while its lower end is slightly curved, and is bolted to the rear face of said scraper, and near the right-hand edge of the same a brace, 11, is bolted to the lower face of the crossbeam 2 and to the rear face of the foot 9, thus supporting said foot. The foot 10 is bolted to the left-hand face of the main beam 1 by bolts 3, extends rearwarda short distance, and then turns downward, and is also fastened to the rear face of the said scraper 8.
In the left-hand or rear end of the crossbeam 2 is bolted a foot, 12, to the lower end of which is fastened a shovel-plow, 13. This foot 12 is also supported by a brace, 14., which is fastened to the lower face of beam 2 and rear face of said foot 12.
At the junction of the main beam 1 and cross-beam 2, and through the center of each, is placed a gage, 15, which is supported by the brace 16. This gage 15 is for the purpose of regulating the depth to which the scraper 8 is desired to go, and when no special depth is required the gage may be removed and a foot and plow be attached to the brace 16 in the place of said gage.
In the gage 15 are several perforations, 17, that it may be raised or lowered to regulate the depth of the scraper as desired, and has a foot, 18, which runs parallel with beam 1. The front end, 19, of this foot is slightly turned up, which counteracts the downward pressure of the scraper 8 and plow-point 13.
In the lower end of the braces 9 and 10 and plow-feet are slots to allow the scraper and shovel-plows to be raised or lowered as they become worn. 4
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cultivator and scraper as above described, having the main beam 1 and crossbeam 2, the combination of scraper 8, secured ter and clod-guard 6, on a line with the righthand side of the scraper 8, and the plow 13, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a cultivator and scraper as above described, having the main beam 1 and crossbeam 2, the combination of the scraper 8, secured to same as above described, cutter and clod-guard 6, adjustable gage 15, set in the junction of the said beams and having foot 18, and plow 13, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. MILLER.
