, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
URIAH T. STEWART, OF SAULSBURY, TENNESSEE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,417, dated November 8, 1881. Application filed July 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH T. STEWART, a citizen'of the United States, resident of Saulsbury, State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Plows and I do hereby declare that the followingisafull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of aside view of myinvention. Fig.2is a plan view. Figs. 3 and 4. are detail views.
This invention has relation to plows; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the plow-beam; B B, the handles, and O O the standards braced to the beam. in the usual manner, spoolsD being used to separate the beam and standards.
The shovel or pointEisserratedonits edges, as at a b. One of these serrated edges may be in a horizontal plane and the other in a perpendicular or vertical plane, or bOthlllEty be horizontal or both perpendicular, the object being to cut the roots as thepointpasses through the ground. The point is secured to the stock or standard by bolts, as usual.
F designates a mold-board, which is halfheart shape in form, and is hinged to the righthand side of the foot of the standard and is stayed by a slotted brace, G, so that it may be adjusted either backward or forward.
If desired, the mold-board may be removed at any time by disconnecting the securing-bolts, and the serrated shovel-point may be used alone.
The combination of the serrated point and the mold-board produces a half-turning shovel plow, when one serrated edge is vertical, as shown.
The brace or stay-rod G is bolted to the rear face of the hinged mold-board F, and a securlug-bolt, H,is passed through the slot I in the same, whereby it is connected to the standard.
The operation of the plow is apparent from the foregoing description.
It is obvious that the serrated edges will cut the roots with which they come in contact, and that the mold-board may be adjusted to throw a wide or narrow furrow at pleasure; also,
.that'the mold-board may be entirely removed by withdrawing the securing-bolts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a plow, thecom bination, with aplow-point having a serrated horizontal edge and a serrated vertical edge, of a half-heart shaped moldboard hinged to the stock and adjustably braced thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
URIAH THRUT STEWART.
