UNITED STATES PATENT cOFFICEe HENRY MoRRIsoN, oE PATERsoN, NEW JERSEY.
REST Fo4 R- ENGIN E-LATH Es.
I, A Specification forminglpartfof-Iietters No. 3,?I99, dated October 1., 1861.
Toa/ZZ whom zit/may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MORRISON, of in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Improved Rest for Engine-Lathes; and I do hereby declare that the following is la full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- ,p
Figure l is 'a side elevation. Fig. 2
w of the opposite side, and Fi similar vie o,
is a vertical section.
Similar letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my inventionconsists in the combination and arrangement of a frame and movable cams operated by meansv of a worm or bearings in such a manner that a portion:- may-be readily removed and the ,Whole opened for the purpose of inserting .the Work, and when replaced be in the proper condition for'- operation without the use of4 other' fastening than suicient to hold theframe in position. By this arrangement I ain enabled to use a se1f-centering rest upon. the necks of 'shafts and in similar places wheresuch rests as heretofore constructed have been -impracticable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invetion,`l will proceed to describe its construction and operation-by the aid of the drawings, and the letters of referencemarked thereon. f l Ais the base, adapted to t the track or ways of the lathe-bed and having a' slotin the center, through whicha bolt o. passes to' hold itin position. The upper side -of this4 base is formed with a'devetailfgroove, in.
fitedpto sli @Isae-laurea passes through als-1ot'.in"-thefr' feBm al y to- A; '.Byloos'ening this' bolt. maybe -slid in the groove iIrA the frame B The general form of the frame B is circular, and it is made in two parts B'B, held together by bolts passing through ears made for that purpose, as represented. One face of B B is recessed, and lugs C are cast or otherwise affixed within this recess, through which the slides or bearers D are fitted to slide'in radiallines. A ring E E' is fitted to turn freely within the hole in B B and is held specified;
'in position by' a flange e on one side anc Wedges creams G attached to the other, 'which cams or wedges are forced by the rotation of AE. E' between the ends `of the slides D and.
the flange on B B', and thus cause the former to move equal distances toward the center, y
preserving in all pL 3i tions their concentricity. This ring is also madein two parts, the part E remaining-in the bottom half B of theV frame, and the part E lifting 0E with the other part B when the latter is opened, thereby enabling any article to be laid in position.
When the frame'B Bis again united and fastened, the ring E E actspreciisely the.
same as :ffin one piece, being confined by B B', so that the moving one part necessitates 'a corresponding motion of the other.
of aworm or tangent screw H,- kmounted in bearings on B and' meshinginto teeth for-med upon. the flange eef the part E. By rotating the worm H by means of 'a crank applied to the end of its arbor the -slides D are forced in or allowed to slide outward lto contract o'r' expand the size of the circle bounded by their inner ends i'n order to .lit diEe'rent sizes of l work. T wo or more sets of the slides D are provided Vof different lengths, so as to'increase the range of adjustability.'
I am aware lhat cams have-heretofore been used in combination with slides arranged and operated in a somewhat similar manner in chucks and screw-cutting machines, and I make no vclaim to such combination; but 1 am not awarethat any-such combination has been heretofore arranged s0 as to allow a por- ,tion to be removed inthe mannerand for the' .pnrpose'abeve set forth. rlnherefore,
What I claim .as my-i to secure. by Letters'lateh, iss-- e` cam-frinfffE lE vsimilarl constructed,.

Motion 1 is communicated to the ring E lE by means nvention, anddesire The frame B B', made'intwo or Vmore parts',-v
