A. WHEELER.
DRAFT'EQUALIZER.
Patented Jan. 5
' INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBION WHEELER, OF RIDGEWAY, IOWA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
EEPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,705, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed May 26, 1855. Serial No. 166,136. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBION WHEELER, of Ridgeway, in the county of VVinneshiek and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Draft'Equalizer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my new and improved draftequalizer, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim. Referring to the drawings, A represents a three-horse evener. This has the curved slot 13 made through it at one side of the center of its length, and the evener is provided at its front edge, in line with the slot 13, with the fulcrumblock G, secured to the evener by the bolts a a. A triangular rockin-g yoke or clevis, D, is attached to the evener by a bolt, E, that passes through the cheekpieces 12 b of the yoke or clevis D and through theslot B, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The yoke or clevis D is formed with the central point or projection, 0, also with the cavities d dand the end projections, e e, which latter are shorter than the central projection, c. The block 0 is formed with the central cavity, f, and side projections, g 5/, so that the projections and cavities of yoke or clevis D interniesh like large cogs with the projections and cavities of the block 0, the central projection, a, serving as the rocking or fulcrum point for the yoke or clevis D, the projections g e serving to prevent lateral displacement of the yoke or clevis D. A rear clevis, F, is attached to the apex of the triangular yoke D by the same bolt E that attaches the yoke D to the evener A, and swiveled to clevis F is another clevis G, by which the evener may be attached to any object to be drawn by a team.
The evener A being arranged to draw against the rocking yoke or clevis D, placed in front of the evener, produces a shifting fulcrum that automatically equalizes the draf -that is, if end 1' of the evener falls behind, the apex of the yoke D will swing in slot B toward that end of the evener, and thus shorten leveragein favor of the rear horse, and thus g ve him the advantage until he comes up again even with the horse atta hed to end 1; of the evener. In case the horses attached to end i of the evener fall behind, the. apex ofyoke or clevis D will swing in slot B toward end 1 of the evener, and in like manner shorten the leverage in favor of the two horses, and thus give them the advantage until they gain a level with the horse attached to end t of the evener. In this manner the device is automatic in its action, and always maintains a perfect equalization of draft, and the device may be applied to eveners for any number of horses.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent T e evener A, slotted at B, and provided with the toothed block 0, in combination with he rocking yoke or clevis D, formed with projections and held to the evener by a bolt pass ing through it and through the slot B, substantially as shown and described.
ALBION WHEELER. Witnesses:
