SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,246, dated December 29,1885.
Application filed November 16, 1885. Serial No. 183,000.
(Model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNET OsBonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan View of the blank from which the box is construct ed; Fig. 2, a modification thereof in detail, show ing the end pieces of the blank formed separate and afterward connected thereto; and Fig. 3, a perspective View of the box complete.
The present invention has relation to cer-A tain new and useful improvements in paper boxes, and has reference more particularly to that class having end flaps which are bent inwardly to form supports for the cover, and the latter provided with a lip or flange for' retaining it closed.
The object ot' the invention is to improve the construction of the above-mentioned class of boxes by providing a blank cut into form in such manner as will enable the box to be made from less material, thereby economiziug in stock, as well as producing a strong and durable box from cheap material. These objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 is cut so as to form the bottom A and cover B when the box is formed, or when it is put together, as shown in Fig. 3.
That portion of the blank constituting the bottom A ot' the box is extended to form one of the sides, C, and the part B extended to form a lip or flange, D, thereto. The blank is scored or creased along the lines a b c d, so that the same can be bent into shape to forni the box, that portion of the blank between the lines b c constituting the side E ofthe box, which is opposite to the side C, hereinbefore described.
That portion of the blank which is to constitute the ends of the box, as shown at F, is
formed by the lateral extension of that portion forming the bottom A, these ends being also extended to provide flaps G, the ends being scored or creased along the lines ef, so as to be bent into shape to form the box, as shown in Eig. 3.
This blank, as above described, Ihave shown in Fig. l as being of one and a single piece; but, if preferred, it may be made in three pieces, the two end pieces forming the ends F and liaps G of the box being separate and afterward attached by strip g, of paper or muslin, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby saving material, as small pieces or scraps can be utilized. y
In making cheap work the blank may be made of cheap stock and the box iinished by covering with plain or ornamental paper, and for better work can stay the corners with paper or muslin and then cover with fancy papers.
rlhe ilaps G, as well as the flange orlip D,may be of any desirable width, and may be fastened down in position or not, as preferred, the object of the iiaps being designed as a support for the cover of the box and to prevent the contents from coming out.
The cutting of the blank takes less stock than the blanks usually employed in the manufacture oi' boxes of an equal size, thereby materially decreasing the cost of manufacture.
In boxes where the cover will be opened and closed often thejoint thereof may be reenforced by a strip of muslin or paper across the back thereof, to serve as a hinge to keep the cover from breaking off.
This blank, as will be seen, is simple in form, consisting of a rectangular piece of paper, board, or other material from which the box is to be constructed, the piece or strip being scored or creased transversely, as shown, to form the bottom, sides, and top or cover of the box, and also the tongue or flange of said cover, and provided with lateral exten- ICO ed from a blank consisting of a rectangular In testimony that I claim the above I have strip creased or scored transversely, as shown, hereunto subscribed my name in the presence to form the bottom, sides, and cover of the of two witnesses.
box, and also the tongue or flange to the cover, BENN ET OSBORN. 5 said blank having lateral creased or scored extensions to form the ends and flaps thereto,
. Witnesses:
FRED G. OsBoRN,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l BENNET OsBoRN, .I r.
