Description

(No Model.)
K. AS. JONES. BILLIARD GHALK HOLDER.
UNITED STATES PATENT Grinch.
KASSAK S. JONES, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BANS'OM N. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
BlLL|ARooHALK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,230, dated December 29, 1885.
Application led April 14, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KassAK S. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard Chalk Holders, of which the following is a specifica-tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improvement in bil.- liard-chalk holders, and has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient device for holding chalk securely, and to prevent injury to the walls or furniture by striking of the holder; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my device.
The body A is constructed, preferably, of wood, but may, when desired, be formed of celluloid, metal, or other suitable substances. This body may be provided with an eye, a, or other similar construction, to facilitate-its connection with the string by which it is suspended. In one end of this body I form a socket, B, fitted to partially receive the chalk C. A slit or cut, l), leading from the socketed end of the body A, divides such end of the body into two sections, l and 2, and this cut D is made of such width that the sections 1 and 2 may be clamped together and on the chalk with sufficient tightness to properly secure the same. In order to clamp these arms together, l employ the screw E, which turns freely through an opening through the section l and threads into section 2. Thus by tightening up the screw the sections may be drawn together and on the chalk. Manifestly the body A may be manufactured and sold as a complete article and the screw be applied by the purchaser or user.
By means of the holder, as described, the player is not obliged to take the chalk in his lingers to chalk his cue, but may grasp the body, and the latter, being larger, affords a more secure hold and enables a more deXter- Serial N0. 162,169.
(No model.) v
ous and firmer manipulation of the chalk than when the latter is held in the ngers.
It is intended that this chalk-holder be suspended by a cord on the wall, and when the player has finished using the chalk it, on being released, will fall back against the wall. The force of the fall against the Wall is liable to crack or otherwise injure the holder and to damage the wall. To obviate this, I provide the body of the helder, near its lower or socketed end, with a cushion, F. This cushion may be a web of felt or other suitable substance secured by tacking orotherwise to the body A; but it is prelerably a band of thick or round rubber, as by such construction-I secure the desired cushioning property, and the elasticity of the rubber will operate to secure it properly on the body A, thus dispensing with tacks and similar fastening eX- pedients.
I am aware that holders for rubber erasers have been formed with a metallic ferrule split' or bifu'rcated and with a screw passing loosely through one of the limbs and engaging threads in the other to draw them together and cause them to pinch upon the eraser, and also that holders for chalking billiard-cues have been made of a recessed or socketed piece ot' elastic or soft rubber, which will of its own contraction pinch and hold the chalk, and at the same time forni a cushion exteriorly to prevent scratches and injury to the Walls and furniture, and I do not claim such, my invention being simply a short block of v any cheap material having, in addition to the split or slot which makes the limbs adjustable, a recess in the end for receiving the chalk, with the said slot extending beyond it, the pinching-screw and the cushions surrounding the largest part of the block.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A device for holding blocks of chalk for chalking billiardcues, consisting. of the block or body A, having the recess B in its lower end, and the slot D, extending through the walls of the recess and beyond it,through the body of the block to a sufficient distance In testimony whereof I ax my signature in to make the limbs of the block sufficiently prescnceofV t-Wo Witnesses. expansible, a. pinching screw let loosely through one of the liinbs'and engaging with KASSAK S. JONES. 5 the other at a point between the base of the recess and the closed end of the slot, and the Witnesses: elastic cushion F, surrounding said block or CHANCEY JONES, body near the bottom thereof.
