Description

UNITED STATES JARVIS II. STEDIVIAN, OF RANDOLPH, VERMONT.
IMPROVED CLOTH ES-WRINGER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,271, dated September 10, 1861.
To @ZZ whom, it may cori/ocra:
Be it known that I, JARvrs H. STEDMAN, of the town of Randolph, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Applying Power to Rollers or Cylinders for the Purpose of Expressing Water from Clothes and other Substances; and the following is a clear and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the arrangement of double-hinged compound levers connected together and operated by an adjustable crosslever and secured by a catch, the levers forniing the journal-boxes for rollersor cylinders, so that the space between them may be opened more or less,4 as required for various substances, and the necessary amount of pressure retained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe it, referring tothedrawingand tothe letters marked thereon.
The frame on which I arrange my levers and rollers is made with sills A A,into which are framed upright posts B B, and on the top are plates C C, and secured together by crossties D D, the whole width being the same as the length of the rollers E and F, which may be of metal or wood; or they may be of indiarubloer or of any other substance that is best adapted to the purposes for which they are to be used. The levers a and b are pivoted to the plates C by bolts c c. In the fulcrum end are journal-boxes ef, in which the rollers E and F are hung to operate.
At the lower end of the levers c1, b are short levers g and 7L, connected together and attached to a cross-bar G, which connects the levers together on both sides of the frame, they being alike. To the cross-piece on the under part of the frame in the center is hinged a long lever I-I, which rests upon the crossbar G, it being clamped to the bar by a strap or bar of metal I, the end being turned up at an angle to pass through the lever, having a screw and thumb-nut t' on the top. The position of the levers can be slightly varied, and the power graduated by changing the bar G in the notches on the strip j under the lever H. When the required pressure is obtained on the rollers,it can be retained by hooking the plate Z on the lever II under the ratchet k, which is secured to the upright post K on the extended end of the frame.
'Io one end of the roller E is attached a crank-handle J, by which to operate the rollers either way, as may be desired, one of the rollers being considerably elevated above the other for the purpose ot' conveniently taking in and removing the substances. Underneat-h the rollers and covering the top of the frame is a broad fiat spout or conductor M for the clothes or substances to rest on, as Well to conductthe water expressed therefrom.
My arrangement of levers as applied to rollers for the purposes of expressing fluids from various substances, as Well as compressing and smoothing others, has many advantages over any thing that has yet come to my knowledge. It admits of a greater range of opening, While the power applied is uniform and may be adjusted to any required degree of pressure by changing the fulcrum on the long lever, and any pressure may be retained by securing the lever-in the manner above described. In a word, it is portable, simple, cheap, and eiiicient, and Will be much used for the purposes for which it is designed.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement ofthe double-hinged compound levers, the same being connected together by a rod or bar and operated by an adjustable cross-lever and catch acting upon cylinders or rollers, 'in the manner and for the purposes herein specified.
