SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,663, dated December 15, 1885.

Application filed April 24, 1885. Serial No. 163,340. (No model l To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J oHN H. LANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana,

in the county of Indiana and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files, of which the following is a specitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved letter or paper iile or clip secured to a back Or tablet. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the tubular letter-holders, their base, post, and catch-opener detached from the portion having arched wires. Fig. 3 is a section taken longitudinally through the device, showing a pile ofletters held in place by it, and indicating by dotted lines the tubular letter-holders with their base in a position for receiving or allowing the removal of letters; Fig. 4, a section across front of movable and stationary parts.

This invention relates to le holders or clips which are designed for temporarily receiving and safely holding letters, papers, or any other valuable written or printed matter which it is desired to preserve in regular order of dates or otherwise, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.

A designates a back-board of any suitable size, of wood or other suitable material; and B designates the base-plate of the improved file-holder or clip. This plate is constructed with two parallel grooves, a a, a beveled springcatch, a', and side notches, a".

C designates the base-plate of two parallel hooks or arches b b, which are made of wire, bent as shown, and rigidly secured into said plate C. These hooks or arches serve as guards, as will hereinafter appear. The baseplate G is constructed with flanges, which are itted into the notches ai of the base-plate B; also, with a central raised portion having a centra-l recess.

When the base-plates B and G are properly adj usted on the back-boardA or other object, they are rigidly secured thereto by screws c c. In practice I shall cast on the upper edge of the plate C an eye, c, by which the device can be hung upon anail driven into a wall or desk.

From this base D rise perpemlicularly two tubular letter-holders, dt d, which pass through the side-extended wings ofthe base D, and are rigidly secured thereto. y The upper ends ofthe tubular holders d2 d" are pointed and beveled, and adapted to form smooth joints when in contact with the overhanging extremities ofthe two hooks or arches l) l), as shown in Fig. l. Equidistaut from the tubular holders d2 d?, and rigidly secured between the tongues d d ofthe basel), is a hollow post, E, through which passes freely an eudwisemovable pin, e, having a knob, c', on its outer end. This pin is not readily removable from its post, for if it were it might be lost or misplaced. Directly in a longitudinal line with the inner end of the movable pin c a slot is made in the bottom of the tongue portion ot` the base-plate D, terminating at each end in a recess, one of which--namely, that directly in line with said pin-is designed to receive the spring-catch a when the parts are in position indicated by Fig. l, and to retain the points of the tubular holders in close contact with the points of the arched guards b b. The other recess above referred to is designed to receive catch a and arrest and retain the baseplate D when drawn down to the position indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 3. The pin e is pressed upon to release the base-plate Dfrom the first position named, and it is released from the lastnamed position, either to remove it entirely from the base-plates B C or to return it back to the position first named, by pressing back the beveled catch with the end of a penholder, pencil, or other pointed instrument.

In practice I prefer to punch the letters or other papers to be tiled by means of a device which will form the subject ot' another application bearing even date with the tiling of this.

The papers properly punched are adjusted on the holders dt d, when theirbase plate is partially withdrawn from its recess, after which the base-plate'D is moved back and locked.

, It is obvious that any one of the papers on file can be inspected by simply slipping those IOO above it from the holders d2 d2 upon'the hooks or arched guards b b.

When the ile-holder or clip is filled with papers, the base-plate D is removed from the 5 plates B and G and inverted so that the points I5 G; but as this forms no part of this present invention, I lay no claim to it here. I have shown and described this punch in anapplication filed on the same date that this was iiled.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new isl. In a file-holder, the combination of the grooved fixed plate B, the recessed and anged fixed plate G, the arched guards secured to the latter, with the sliding base-plate D, having tongues d, and'provided with tubular h0lders having beveled pointed ends, a springcatch, a', and means for disengaging the same.

In a file-holder, the combination, With the recessed base-plate C and its arched guards, of movable plate D, having tubular holders,

a locking-catch for securing the plate D in the open or closed position, and a releasing-pin on said plate.

3. In a file-holder, the fixed plate B, provided with a spring-catch attached thereto, and having parallel grooves,with the recessed base-plate G, having arched guards, the sliding plate D, provided with tubular holders, a

post, E, a releasing-pin, and recesses for said spring-catch.
