SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,523, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed October 24, 1885. Serial No. 180,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. HENIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Chimney Cowls and Ventilators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and aecommpanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a front view of a chimney cowl and ventilatorembodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents alongitudinal section thereof in line 00 .0, Fig. 1.

My invention consists of chimney cowl and ventilator constructed in such a manner that it produces an increased draft in the chimney, flue, &e., to which it is applied, rotates with great freedom, and is simple and inexpensive, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the rotating cap of the cowl or ventilator, and B represents the supporting-tube thereof, said tube being properly attached to a chimney, flue, or other place where the cowl or ventilator is employed. To the top of the cap, on the under side thereof, is secured a depending sleeve, 0, which is rested rotatingly on a step, D, the latter rising centrally from the saddle E, whose lower ends are bent horizontally, forming lips E, which are bolted, screwed, or otherwise connected with the lugs F, which project from the annulus or ring G and sus tain said saddle. The annulusGis connected with the top of the tube B, and, owing to the lugs F, step D, and sleeve 0, sustains the rotating cap A. The lower end of the sleeve 0 is provided with a flange, O, and the step D has an opening, D, below said flange. A fastening, H, is employed for holding the sleeve on the step and preventing upward displacement of the cap, said fasteningbeing formed of a piece of bent wire or metal, one limb of which enters the opening D and the (No model.)
other limb overhangs the flange C, so as to lock the sleeve to the step without interfering with the rotation of said sleeve, and consequently of the cap. If desired, the flange may be formed on the step and the fastening attached to the sleeve Without departing from my invention. By turning or removing the fastening H the cap may be displaced when so desired. It will be seen that the cap is permitted to rotate with freedom. The step provides a long bearing for the sleeve, and as one is inclosed within the other a strong support is provided for the cap on the saddle. The lips E and the lugs F avoid a bar across the top of the annulus G, so that there is an increased draft in the chimney, flue, 800. The lips and arched-shaped saddle form a strong structure for sustaining the step D and the parts thereon. The step is cast or otherwise formed integral with the saddle at the crown thereof, being thereby strong and durable.
I am aware that its not new to support a cowl on an annulus by means of a saddle and step, and therefore do not claim the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cowl or ventilator, the annulus G, having the interior lugs, F, in combination with saddle E, having lips E at the base thereof, the step D, rising from said saddle, and a cap-sustaining sleeve, 0, fitted on said step, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cowl or ventilator, the cap-sustaining sleeve 0, having an external flange, O, at the base thereof, in combination with the step D, having opening D, the fastening H.
encircling the flange O, the saddle E, and annulus G, substantially as described.
