UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ SAMUEL R. PARKS, OF PAVVTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
TOBACCO HOLDER AND SHAVER.
FJPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,284, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed June 25, 1884. Serial No. 135,984.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. PARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paw tucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Tobacco Holder and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the features of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings are hereby made part of this specification, similar letters of reference thereon indicating corresponding parts.
Figure l of said drawings is a perspective view of said device, the wall of the lower chamber being broken away to show the follower. Fig. 2 is a top view with the lid swung open, showing the knife in the upper chamber. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the walls and threaded rod of the device, and showing also the follower in the lower chamber.
a is the upper, and I) thelower, chamber. 6 is the lid covering the top of the upper chamber, and is capable of being swung open, as seen in Fig. 2, by means of the screw-fastener f. it shows the cutter, which is made adjustable by means of the set screws t t. k is the threaded bar, and m the attached follower.
The upper chamber is about one-third the length of the lower chamber, the walls being of the same general shape as the latter, and its top consisting of the movablelid 6. Its bottom is cast with or permanently soldered to the walls or sides, and has a diagonal slit to receive the knife, which, being placed therein, is adj ustably secured by the screws *5 i.
The lower chamberhas the walls of the form and with the swell back shown in the draw ings. Its closed bottom is soldered to the sides, and has near its edge a perforation or socket, which receives and holds the end of the screw-rod k, as seen at 0, which comes down through the rounded back above mentioned. In the top of the lower chamber, over the round in the back, is cast or soldered a stationary shoulder having a perforated center, which holds the threaded rod is. This rod protrudes above the shoulder into the rounded back of the upper chamber, in which it is riveted or otherwise rigidly fastened, as seen at the point it. The follower m has a projection fitting into the rounded back of the lower chamber, and in the center of this pro- (No model.)
jection is a threaded perforation, through which the threaded rod is is passed in such manner that the turning of the rod raises or lowers the follower by means of the fitted threads on the rod and in the perforated projection of the follower.
The block or plug of tobacco is placed in the lower chamber and rested on the follower m, which is so adjusted that the top of the plug will be presented to the knife h. In this position the tobacco may be carried in the pocket without contact with any foreign matter and unaffected by heat or perspiration. When used as acutter, the top or upper chamber is simply to be turned around and the knife shaves off a thin part of the plug, the shaving or layer being retained in the part a while the lid 6 is closed. The threaded rod 70, being rigidly fastened in or riveted to the upper chamber, as described,is necessarily turned with the latter and raises the follower m. Thus every time the part a is turned around the plug of tobacco is lifted just enough to permit the knife to cut off another shaving, when the top is swung around again. When the required amount of tobacco is so out, it can be easily removed from the upper chamber by swinging back the lid 6. The thickness of these cuttings may be regulated by means of the screws 2' i, and these screws also enable the knife to be removed for sharpening, and for replacement at will and without difficulty.
The follower can of course be lowered at any time by turning the part a in the opposite direction from that by which the cutting is done.
WVha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p A plug-tobacco cutter consisting of an upper chamber, a, for holding the out tobacco, hav ing the movable lid 0, adjustable knife h, and rigid connecting threaded rod k, in combination with a lower chamber, b, for carrying the plug, having the described shoulder and socket for the rod 70, and carrying within it and upon said rod the attached follower m, all con structed in the manner and used for the purposes substantially as set forth.
